What’s covered under the article:
- India to achieve 20% ethanol blending (E20) in petrol by October 2025, with E20 now available at over 15,600 outlets.
- India has increased solar power capacity 32 times in a decade, making it the world’s third-largest solar power producer.
- Petroleum refining capacity to rise from 256 million tonnes to 309 million tonnes by 2028, boosting India’s status as a refining hub.
At the India Energy Week (IEW) 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the country’s significant progress toward meeting its 2030 energy goals. Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister reaffirmed that India will be able to achieve its ambitious targets, including a 20% ethanol blending (E20) in petrol by October 2025.
Key Targets for India’s Energy Sector by 2030
India’s energy goals for 2030 include:
- 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity
- Making Indian Railways a net-zero emitter
- Producing five million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually
These milestones are set to position India as a global leader in energy sustainability and help reduce the country’s carbon footprint.
Progress in E20 Petrol and Solar Power
The Prime Minister also mentioned that E20 petrol is already available at over 15,600 outlets across India, and E100 fuel was launched in the country in 2024. Additionally, India has seen a 32-fold increase in solar energy generation capacity over the last decade, positioning the country as the third-largest solar power producer globally.
Recent budget allocations are further boosting the domestic solar photovoltaic cell manufacturing and battery storage infrastructure, strengthening the renewable energy sector.
Hydrocarbon Exploration and Refining Capacity
Despite its advancements in renewable energy, India continues to focus on traditional energy sources such as hydrocarbons. The country has substantial untapped hydrocarbon reserves in its 3.36 million square kilometers of sedimentary basin, with only 10% of the area under exploration so far. The goal is to increase this exploration to 16% by the end of 2024, although still short of the one million square kilometers target set for 2030.
India remains the fourth-largest petroleum refining hub in the world, with its refining capacity projected to grow from 256 million tonnes to 309 million tonnes by 2028.
Balancing Renewable and Traditional Energy
With its abundant natural resources, strategic geographical position, and a stable political environment, India is poised to become a leading global energy producer. The country aims to strike a balance between leveraging both renewable and traditional energy sources to meet the growing energy demands while working toward a sustainable future.
India's energy strategy focuses on building a more resilient energy infrastructure, enhancing its clean energy capabilities, and making strides in areas like solar power, green hydrogen, and ethanol blending.
India's energy sector developments serve as a key example of how countries can accelerate their transition to a low-carbon economy while still capitalizing on traditional energy resources.
