Learn about India's decision to allow exports of non-basmati white rice and broken rice to meet food security needs in Tanzania, Djibouti, and Guinea Bissau.
In a move aimed at addressing food security concerns in African nations, the Indian government has authorized the export of rice to Tanzania, Djibouti, and Guinea Bissau. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has granted permission for the export of 30,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Tanzania and 80,000 tonnes of broken rice to Djibouti and Guinea Bissau.
While exports of non-basmati white rice have been restricted since July 20, 2023, to bolster domestic supply, exceptions are made for certain countries upon request to fulfill their food security requirements.
Tanzania, situated in East Africa, along with Djibouti, located on the northeast coast of the African continent, and Guinea Bissau, a tropical nation in West Africa, will benefit from India's rice exports.
According to the notification by DGFT, 30,000 tonnes of broken rice are permitted for export to Djibouti, while 50,000 tonnes are allocated to Guinea Bissau.
India has previously sanctioned similar rice exports to countries such as Nepal, Cameroon, Cote D' Ivore, Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Seychelles.
Facilitating these exports is the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL), a multi-state cooperative society. NCEL is jointly promoted by renowned cooperative societies in India, including the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) known as AMUL, Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO), Krishak Bharati Cooperative Ltd (KRIBHCO), and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED).
This decision underscores India's commitment to supporting global food security initiatives and strengthening bilateral ties with African nations through cooperative efforts in agriculture and trade.
