The Government of India has strongly protested against the alleged treatment of Indian nationals who were deported from the United States on February 5. According to reports, these individuals, deported for illegal entry into the US, claimed they were shackled and handcuffed throughout their journey on a military aircraft. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that it had formally registered its concerns with US authorities, particularly over the use of shackles on women.
India's Objection to Deportation Practices
The MEA’s response came after Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas raised questions regarding the treatment of Indian deportees and the broader issue of illegal Indian immigrants in the US. The Indian government has demanded that US authorities prevent inhumane treatment of deportees during transit. However, the US government denied allegations of shackling women or children in the subsequent deportation flights that landed in India on February 15 and 16.
Number of Indian Deportees from the US
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar informed the Rajya Sabha that between January 2025 and March 13, a total of 388 Indians were deported from the US. Additionally, 295 individuals currently in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody have received final orders of removal. The Indian government is in the process of verifying their nationality, ensuring that only confirmed Indian citizens are accepted back.
Key Issues Raised in Parliament
MP John Brittas posed several questions to the government, seeking details about:
-
The total number of illegal Indian immigrants currently in the US.
-
The number of Indian passport holders awaiting deportation from the US.
-
Whether the Indian government has engaged in talks with US authorities to prevent inhumane treatment of deportees.
-
The current status of diplomatic discussions on this issue.
India’s Diplomatic Response
In response, the Indian government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights of its citizens abroad. While it acknowledged US immigration laws, it insisted on fair and humane treatment of deportees. The MEA is reportedly engaging in diplomatic discussions with US authorities to ensure future deportation procedures uphold human rights standards.
Future Implications and Policy Outlook
The issue highlights growing concerns over the treatment of illegal Indian immigrants in the US. With thousands of Indian nationals migrating every year, the need for stronger bilateral cooperation in immigration policies remains crucial. India is expected to push for greater transparency in deportation procedures and establish clear guidelines to prevent inhumane treatment of deportees.
