India's strong rejection of Turkish President Erdogan's recent comments on Kashmir has sparked diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the media on Friday, condemning the remarks made by Erdogan during his visit to Pakistan. India has termed Erdogan's comments as "objectionable," unwarranted, and unacceptable, stressing that they undermine India’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir.
Erdogan's Controversial Kashmir Remarks
While on a two-day visit to Pakistan, President Erdogan made statements suggesting that the Kashmir issue should be resolved through dialogue between India and Pakistan. Erdogan specifically called for a resolution according to UN resolutions, with consideration for the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He also expressed solidarity with the people of Kashmir, stating, "Our state and our nation, as in the past, stand in solidarity with our Kashmiri brothers today."
These remarks, however, did not sit well with India, which has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of the country. The Indian government reiterated that the region is a matter of India's internal affairs and that no foreign intervention is acceptable.
India's Stance on Kashmir
India has been clear in its position regarding the territorial integrity of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The government has repeatedly emphasized that the Union Territories are and will remain an inseparable part of India. The situation took a dramatic turn on August 5, 2019, when India revoked Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This decision also bifurcated the state into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh—further solidifying India's control over the region.
Despite the change in status, India has remained firm in its stance and maintains that the Kashmir issue is an internal matter and should be addressed by India and Pakistan bilaterally, without any external interference.
India's Protest and Diplomatic Action
In response to Erdogan's comments, India expressed its discontent through diplomatic channels. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that India had lodged a strong protest with the Turkish ambassador regarding Erdogan’s remarks. Jaiswal pointed out that such statements from foreign leaders are unwarranted and undermining India's sovereignty, emphasizing that it would have been more productive if Erdogan had called out Pakistan's role in cross-border terrorism, a major threat to peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
Erdogan's Efforts to Strengthen Ties with Pakistan
Alongside his comments on Kashmir, Erdogan also highlighted Turkey's desire to strengthen bilateral ties with Pakistan, which is seen in the strategic cooperation agreements signed during the visit. In the 7th Pakistan-Turkey High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting, the two nations agreed to work towards a USD 5 billion trade volume and deepen their strategic partnership. Erdogan’s visit also included discussions on enhancing cooperation in areas such as defense, trade, and energy.
Despite these efforts to expand Turkey's influence in South Asia, India has made it clear that any foreign involvement in the Kashmir issue is unacceptable, reaffirming that the matter is strictly between India and Pakistan.
Ongoing Tensions in India-Turkey Relations
This diplomatic spat over Erdogan's comments on Kashmir adds to an already complicated relationship between India and Turkey. In recent years, India has expressed concern over Turkey’s support for Pakistan on international forums, particularly concerning the Kashmir issue.
While Turkey continues to show solidarity with Pakistan over Kashmir, India remains firm in asserting its sovereignty. The diplomatic tension between the two countries highlights the broader geopolitical divide and the complexity of international relations in the South Asian region.
Looking Ahead
As tensions between India and Turkey grow over the Kashmir issue, the international community is closely watching how these two nations will navigate their bilateral relations in the coming years. While Turkey seeks to strengthen its ties with Pakistan, India continues to uphold its position on Kashmir, rejecting any form of external intervention. The situation remains fluid, and the world will be keenly observing future developments in the India-Turkey diplomatic landscape.
