In a sharp response to remarks made by UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk, India has vehemently rejected his comments on the situations in Kashmir and Manipur, calling them unfounded and baseless. The remarks were made during Turk’s global update to the 58th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 4, 2025.

India's Rejection of Criticism

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Arindam Bagchi, delivered a strong statement in response to Turk’s comments. He emphasized that India remains a "healthy, vibrant, and pluralist society," stressing that the world's largest democracy continues to flourish despite criticism from global bodies.

Bagchi specifically pointed out that Turk’s remarks were jarring and contradicted the realities on the ground. Referring to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, he stated that it was ironic that the region's positive developments were overlooked. These developments include large provincial election turnouts, booming tourism, and rapid infrastructure progress.

Bagchi also rejected Turk’s reference to Kashmir as simply “Kashmir”, pointing out that the term is misleading and fails to capture the region’s evolving dynamics. India’s progress in the region, he asserted, runs counter to such simplistic narratives.

Bagchi criticized the UN update for oversimplifying complex issues with sweeping generalizations. He accused the report of using loose terminologies that failed to reflect the real diversity of the Indian experience and the country's political and social complexities. He called for a more genuine understanding of India’s civilizational ethos of diversity and openness.

Bagchi noted that the Indian people have repeatedly proven such concerns wrong, calling for a better understanding of India’s political, social, and cultural framework. He suggested that rather than relying on misguided external assessments, the international community should adopt a more nuanced view of the country’s development and democratic progress.
