India and Singapore are set to strengthen their strategic and economic partnership with the signing of five new agreements in the sectors of shipping, civil aviation, and space. This will take place during the three-day visit of Singapore Prime Minister Mr. Lawrence Wong to India, which began on September 2, 2025.

High-Level Engagements Between Leaders

The highlight of the visit will be the bilateral talks scheduled on September 4, 2025, between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Following the talks, the two leaders will virtually inaugurate a new container terminal in Maharashtra, developed with an investment of over Rs. 8,803 crore (US$ 1 billion) by the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA). This project marks a significant milestone in maritime connectivity and logistics, further enhancing trade efficiency between the two nations.

Agreements in Key Sectors

The five agreements expected to be signed will focus on shipping, civil aviation, and space cooperation. These pacts will not only facilitate infrastructure development and transport connectivity but will also deepen collaboration in emerging technologies and space exploration.

The civil aviation agreement is expected to improve air connectivity and passenger convenience, while the space cooperation pact will build upon the successful history of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launching satellites for Singapore.

Renewable Energy and Green Projects

India and Singapore are also exploring groundbreaking renewable energy projects, particularly in the field of solar energy exports. Plans are underway to develop an underwater cable project that would enable India to export solar-generated electricity to Singapore. This cable may also double up as a data connectivity link, providing both energy and digital integration between the nations.

Additionally, discussions are ongoing around the possibility of green hydrogen and green ammonia exports from India to Singapore. These initiatives align with the global shift towards cleaner energy and underscore both countries’ commitment to sustainability.

A proposal to establish a financial data regulatory sandbox at GIFT City in Gujarat is also on the table, which could boost fintech innovation and cross-border financial cooperation.

Singapore as India’s Largest FDI Source

Singapore has consistently been one of India’s most important economic partners. In FY25, it emerged as India’s largest foreign direct investor, contributing inflows of Rs. 1,31,517 crore (US$ 14.94 billion). Since 2000, cumulative FDI from Singapore has reached Rs. 15,39,469 crore (US$ 174.88 billion), underscoring the depth of economic ties.

Trade has also witnessed phenomenal growth, rising from Rs. 58,980 crore (US$ 6.7 billion) in 2004-05 to Rs. 3,01,591 crore (US$ 34.26 billion) in 2024-25. This makes Singapore India’s sixth-largest trade partner, an impressive feat given the rapid evolution of global trade dynamics.

Strong Defence and Security Cooperation

The bilateral relationship is not just economic but also strategic. Defence ties between the two nations remain robust under the Enhanced Agreement for Defence Cooperation signed in 2015. Singapore has been an active participant in bilateral and multilateral defence exercises, further strengthening maritime security and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Space Collaboration and Technology Sharing

Cooperation in the space sector has been another important pillar of the relationship. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched multiple Singaporean satellites over the years. This collaboration highlights mutual trust and the shared ambition to expand technological frontiers.

Cultural and People-to-People Ties

Beyond economics and defence, the two nations enjoy strong cultural and social linkages. With nine per cent of Singapore’s resident population being of Indian origin and around 3,80,000 Indian expatriates living in Singapore, the connection between the two countries is deeply rooted in people-to-people engagement. These ties have created a strong foundation of trust, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding.

Looking Ahead

The visit of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is expected to mark a new chapter in India-Singapore relations. The signing of five pacts, inauguration of critical infrastructure projects, and exploration of new areas like renewable energy and fintech innovation reflect a partnership that is forward-looking and dynamic.

With Singapore continuing to play a pivotal role in India’s investment landscape and India emerging as a critical partner in Asia’s economic and strategic architecture, the ties between the two countries are poised for sustained growth and deeper collaboration in the years ahead.
