In a historic event at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, the Indian Navy has commissioned INS Nilgiri, INS Surat, and INS Vaghsheer, marking a significant leap in the nation's maritime capabilities. The ceremony was graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who lauded the occasion as a testament to the "glorious history" of the Navy and the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. These three state-of-the-art warships are poised to strengthen India’s efforts to become a global leader in defence and further bolster its commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

INS Nilgiri: A Stealth Frigate with Advanced Capabilities

INS Nilgiri is the lead ship of the Project 17A stealth frigate class. Named after the majestic Nilgiri mountain ranges, this warship is a major advancement over the previous Shivalik-class frigates. Built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), it is equipped with advanced stealth technology that minimizes its radar signature, making it difficult to detect. It features integrated systems such as the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), Combat Management System (CMS), and advanced aviation facilities, allowing it to operate helicopters like the MH-60R. These features enhance the frigate's survivability and seakeeping abilities, positioning it as one of the world's most advanced warships.

INS Surat: A Destroyer Built for Maritime Supremacy

INS Surat is the fourth and final vessel of the Project 15B stealth destroyer class and the fastest indigenously built destroyer in India. At a length of 164 meters and a displacement of 7,500 tons, it is one of the largest surface combatants ever built in India. Armed with the advanced BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, it can engage air, surface, and subsurface threats across the maritime spectrum. With a crew of 30 officers and 350 sailors, it incorporates modern weaponry like the 76mm Super Rapid Gun Mount and AK-630 guns. The ship's crest, which features the Hazira Lighthouse, symbolizes its maritime power, while its motto "Sagare Prachand" (Ferocious at sea) reflects its formidable presence.

INS Vaghsheer: A Silent Submarine of Unmatched Versatility

INS Vaghsheer is the sixth and final submarine under Project 75 (Kalvari-class). Known for its stealth and versatility, this diesel-electric submarine is designed for multiple roles such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and intelligence gathering. Armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, it can launch precise attacks both underwater and at the surface. With a maximum diving depth of 350 meters and a sea endurance of 50 days, it is one of the most advanced submarines in the world. The submarine features modular construction, enabling future upgrades like Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology.

A Momentous Occasion for India’s Defence Self-Reliance

The commissioning of INS Nilgiri, INS Surat, and INS Vaghsheer underscores India’s growing strength in defence self-reliance. These warships represent a significant step towards indigenous shipbuilding and have passed rigorous trials, ensuring they are fully operational and ready for deployment. The event is a testament to the Indian Navy's capabilities and its role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests.

Strengthening India's Maritime Power

The three warships are designed to operate across a wide range of missions, from combat operations to humanitarian relief, significantly enhancing India’s ability to ensure security in the Indian Ocean Region. Their commissioning marks a milestone in India’s journey toward defence self-sufficiency and establishes the country as a key player in global maritime security.
