The announcement was made by Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications, at the BHARAT 6G 2025 conference, a premier event highlighting India’s ambitions in 6G technology.
As per the Minister’s statement, India has funded more than 111 research projects, allocating a significant Rs. 300 crore (approximately US$ 35.14 million) toward the development of indigenous 6G technologies. These initiatives are part of a larger national framework that envisions India as a pioneering nation in telecom innovation. The projects span across core areas of hardware, software, network architecture, and security protocols, setting the foundation for the country’s dominance in the global 6G ecosystem.
One of the key highlights is the emphasis on the TeraHertz frequency band, a spectrum that is expected to fuel data transmission speeds of up to one terabit per second, making 6G technology 100 times faster than 5G. This leap in speed and efficiency is not just a technological marvel but also a potential economic game-changer.
According to projections shared at the event, 6G could contribute an astounding Rs. 85,37,000 crore (US$ 1 trillion) to India’s economy by 2035. This contribution is expected to come from new industry creation, enhancement of existing sectors, and the transformation of digital infrastructure. These innovations could drive advancements in areas like remote surgeries, autonomous vehicles, AI-driven manufacturing, and real-time immersive experiences, all of which demand ultra-high data throughput and ultra-low latency.
The Minister confidently stated that India, with its vast and highly skilled talent pool, is well-positioned to not only participate but lead the global 6G race. With sufficient preparation time, access to world-class academic institutions, and growing collaboration between the public and private sectors, the country is establishing the groundwork for indigenous innovation.
Another crucial dimension to India’s 6G strategy is national security and data sovereignty. By focusing on indigenous development, India aims to ensure that communications systems remain secure and are developed, operated, and maintained within national borders. This approach is particularly critical in the era of cyber threats, geopolitical tensions, and the growing importance of technological self-reliance.
India’s rise in the 6G patent filing charts is not merely symbolic—it is backed by real groundwork, policy direction, and long-term vision. The government's initiative under the Bharat 6G Vision Document, released in early 2023, laid the roadmap for the current developments. The document envisioned a two-phase rollout of 6G in India, starting with research and testing (2023–2025) and then deployment and commercialization (2025–2030).
So far, India has built multiple 6G testbeds, collaborated with top-tier institutions like IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, and IISc Bangalore, and signed MOUs with global players to foster international cooperation. The government's proactive steps, such as creating a Standardization and Development Task Force, have further reinforced India's trajectory toward telecom independence and excellence.
The private sector, too, has embraced the 6G vision. Leading companies in telecom and technology have aligned their R&D activities with national priorities. Firms like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are investing heavily in AI-integrated communication networks, satellite-based mobile connectivity, and low-power IoT solutions—technologies that are essential for 6G implementation.
6G is expected to bring about a paradigm shift in how the world communicates. Unlike 5G, which revolutionised mobile broadband and IoT, 6G will focus on cognitive and tactile communications, merging digital, physical, and biological worlds. These capabilities will enable applications like real-time remote robotic control, intelligent edge computing, and AI-powered decision-making systems.
Moreover, India’s leadership in 6G technology is aligned with its ambition to become a $5 trillion economy. By investing in foundational technologies, the country is creating an innovation-led growth model. This not only boosts the domestic tech ecosystem but also positions India as a global supplier of telecom solutions, reducing dependency on foreign technologies and encouraging exports of 6G-enabled hardware and software.
Another advantage is the employment opportunities it creates. With more than 100 research projects funded, the demand for engineers, scientists, technicians, and AI specialists is surging. This will help curb the brain drain and retain top talent in the country while also creating jobs across startups, academia, and multinational firms operating in India.
To foster widespread adoption and inclusive development, the government is also working toward policy reforms, including simplified licensing frameworks, enhanced spectrum allocation mechanisms, and support for rural connectivity.
