The upcoming technology demonstrations are designed to evaluate the GPUs’ performance in advanced areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, scientific simulations, and complex mathematical computations—tasks that go well beyond traditional graphics rendering. This marks a pivotal milestone as the GPUs will be tested on their ability to support emerging technology applications critical for future innovations in AI and data processing.
Following the successful tech demos, the project envisions production readiness by 2029, signaling a strategic roadmap for India to establish a domestic manufacturing base for high-end GPUs, reducing reliance on imports and enhancing India’s semiconductor self-reliance.
Government Initiatives and Industry Collaboration
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is spearheading the initiative and plans to engage with global semiconductor manufacturers later this year to further the development and production capabilities of indigenous GPUs. Union Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw has publicly affirmed that India aims to develop and commercialize its own chipsets within the next three to four years, underscoring the government’s strong commitment to building a homegrown semiconductor ecosystem.
Current GPU Procurement and Pricing
In the initial bidding phase, 10 firms were empanelled to supply nearly 18,693 GPUs, featuring prominent models such as Nvidia’s H100 and H200 and AMD’s MI325 and MI300X. Notable participants include major Indian tech players such as Jio Platforms, Tata Communications, and Yotta Data Services, signaling strong industry engagement.
Pricing analysis shows that the average GPU compute unit cost ranges between Rs. 115.85 (~US$ 1.36) per hour (low-end) and Rs. 150 (~US$ 1.76) per hour (high-end), which is significantly lower than the global benchmark rates of Rs. 213.44 to Rs. 256.12 (US$ 2.5 to 3) per hour. This competitive pricing is further enhanced by government plans to provide a 40% discount for startups, academic institutions, and students, promoting broader access and fostering innovation in AI research and development.
Additional concessions are offered to users who commit to long-term usage of six months or more, incentivizing sustained engagement with these GPU resources.
Expansion and Regulatory Landscape
Encouraged by initial success, global players have shown interest in supplying an additional 15,000 to 18,000 GPUs in a second bidding phase, with empanelment now conducted quarterly to keep pace with growing demand.
However, India is approaching the 50,000 GPU cap imposed by the United States (US) under current export control regulations. This limit poses a challenge as India’s tech ambitions grow, but ongoing India-US trade negotiations reportedly include discussions to ease this cap, which could unlock greater GPU imports and accelerate India’s AI and semiconductor goals.

The development of indigenous GPUs aligns with India’s broader objectives to enhance its self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing, a critical sector for digital transformation, national security, and economic growth. High-performance GPUs are central to powering next-generation AI models, data centers, cloud computing, and scientific research.
This move also complements government schemes such as the PLI (Production Linked Incentive) program for semiconductors, which incentivizes domestic manufacturing and innovation.
