India is firmly on its path to becoming the third-largest manufacturing hub in the world, according to Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Mr. Pralhad Joshi. His statement was made during the inauguration of Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited’s third greenfield manufacturing unit and the Lord Sri Rama Temple at the Belur Industrial Area in Dharwad, Karnataka.
Mr. Joshi praised India’s economic transformation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the country has experienced significant manufacturing growth since 2014, emerging as a self-reliant economy. He added that India’s manufacturing sector is now rising to global prominence, alongside China and Vietnam, with strong potential to overtake others and rank third globally.
Highlighting India’s demographic advantage, the Minister emphasized the increasing global demand for Indian youth, particularly in developed countries like Germany, where Indian talent is filling gaps caused by local skill shortages. Mr. Joshi urged local communities to leverage emerging opportunities created by India’s growing industrial base and favorable economic policies.
The event also celebrated the inauguration of Hodek’s latest greenfield unit, which is expected to generate employment for around 500 people in the region. This development marks a significant step forward for North Karnataka’s industrial growth and employment landscape. Mr. Abhijit Khanvilkar, Director at Hodek Vibration Technologies, said the company is committed to further industrialization and local community upliftment.
Sustainability was another key highlight of Hodek’s vision. The company recently launched a 155 kWp rooftop solar power plant at its Pune unit, and the Dharwad facility itself has been developed with eco-friendly features, having earned the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Certification. These initiatives align with India’s broader vision for green and sustainable manufacturing.
Reinforcing the importance of manufacturing to India’s long-term economic growth, NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer Mr. B.V.R. Subrahmanyam recently noted that the sector must grow at 15% annually if it is to contribute 25% to the nation’s GDP by 2047—the centenary year of Indian independence. This ambitious goal will require continued investments, policy support, global collaboration, and skill development.
India’s manufacturing story is already showing signs of accelerated momentum. The country has seen consistent policy reforms such as ‘Make in India’, PLI (Production Linked Incentive) schemes, Ease of Doing Business improvements, and labour law rationalisation, all of which have made it easier for companies to set up manufacturing units across states.
Regions like Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are emerging as preferred industrial destinations due to their infrastructure, skilled workforce, and proactive state governments. In particular, Karnataka is seeing increased interest in sectors such as automotive components, EVs, electronics, defence production, and clean energy.
India’s emphasis on greenfield development—new industrial projects developed on undeveloped land—is also crucial. These projects ensure that modern, compliant, and energy-efficient facilities are established from the ground up, often using renewable energy and following the latest sustainability protocols.
Meanwhile, the integration of digital technology in manufacturing, commonly referred to as Industry 4.0, is gaining traction. Indian factories are adopting automation, AI-based quality control, real-time production monitoring, and predictive maintenance to boost productivity and global competitiveness.
With the world rebalancing supply chains away from overdependence on China, India’s manufacturing opportunity is significant. Multinational corporations are increasingly setting up alternative production bases in India, both to serve the large domestic market and to export globally under various free trade and bilateral agreements.
The continued commitment of policymakers, entrepreneurs, and industrial leaders will determine the trajectory of India’s global manufacturing stature. As India strengthens its position, the economy is expected to benefit from job creation, technology transfers, and increased exports, further cementing its reputation as the next global factory floor.
In conclusion, as Mr. Pralhad Joshi highlighted, India’s youth, enabling environment, and industrial policy have set the stage for a transformation into a top-three global manufacturing power. Whether it’s through greenfield plants, clean energy, or international talent mobility, India’s manufacturing future looks increasingly promising.
