India is set to revolutionize international air travel by implementing facial recognition technology (FRT), with a pilot project scheduled for June 2025. This initiative, announced by Mr. Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of the Digi Yatra Foundation, aims to significantly enhance the airport experience for travelers.

Streamlining the Airport Experience

The FRT system will allow passengers to securely store their identification and travel documents on a mobile platform, thereby eliminating the need for physical ID checks during their journey. This approach is expected to improve security and streamline the check-in process at airports, ultimately enhancing passenger satisfaction.

Currently, the DigiYatra service is operational for domestic flights within India. This service enables contactless entry and security clearance at major airports, including Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.

Future Plans for E-Passports

In addition to FRT, Mr. Khadakbhavi also revealed plans to introduce e-passports for Indian international travellers. The initial rollout of e-passports will focus on international passengers, with Indian citizens gaining access once the government begins issuing these documents. Several countries, including Singapore and various nations within the European Union, have already implemented e-passports, positioning their citizens as early adopters in the forthcoming pilot project.
