Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah recently unveiled the ambitious ‘Cyber Commandos’ program aimed at training 5,000 specialists over the next five years to combat the escalating threat of cybercrime. This announcement was made during the first foundation day of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), where he also launched the new ‘Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre’ (CFMC).

In his address, Mr. Shah emphasized the crucial need for collaboration among various stakeholders to tackle the borderless nature of cyber threats, asserting, "The country's progress is not possible without cybersecurity." The ‘Cyber Commandos’ initiative will create a specialized unit in each State and Union Territory, with Central Police Organizations (CPOs) tasked with managing internal cybersecurity challenges. These trained personnel will aid State/UT authorities and central agencies in safeguarding digital environments, aligning with the Centre’s goal of a ‘Cyber Secure Bharat’.

The I4C, established on October 5, 2018, serves as a national-level coordination hub for combating cybercrime and was formally designated as an attached office under the Ministry of Home Affairs in July 2024. In 2023, the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting Management System (CFCFMS)—a platform developed by I4C—registered 1,128,256 cybercrime incidents. This system aims to quickly address and prevent financial fraud.

Key Cybercrime Statistics:

Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 197,547 complaints.

Maharashtra reported the highest financial fraud amounting to US$ 117.9 million (Rs. 9.9 billion).

The Cyber Commandos program and the Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre represent a significant step towards bolstering India’s cybersecurity infrastructure and responding effectively to the growing challenge of cybercrime.
