India is taking a major step in railway modernization with the development of Vande Bharat 4.0, aimed at meeting both domestic and export demand for advanced trainsets. This announcement was made by Union Minister for Railways, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, during the inauguration of the 16th International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) 2025.
The next-generation Vande Bharat 4.0 trains are designed to benchmark global standards in technology, passenger comfort, and safety. Key enhancements include improved seating arrangements, upgraded toilet facilities, and refined coach workmanship. The rollout of these advanced trainsets is targeted within 18 months, underscoring India’s ambition to strengthen its domestic rail infrastructure while exploring international markets for exports.
The current Vande Bharat 3.0 trains already set performance benchmarks by accelerating from 0 to 100 kmph in 52 seconds while maintaining low noise and vibration levels. The 4.0 version is expected to surpass these performance metrics, delivering a superior passenger experience along with higher efficiency.
The modernization drive also focuses on dedicated high-speed passenger corridors, designed to accommodate speeds of up to 350 kmph. This is part of the broader vision of developing 7,000 km of dedicated high-speed routes by 2047 under India’s Viksit Bharat vision. Additionally, the Amrit Bharat trains are being upgraded to version 4.0, with push-pull locomotives scheduled for testing within 36 months, further improving operational flexibility and efficiency.
Safety is a critical aspect of Vande Bharat 4.0, with deployment of Kavach 4.0, India’s indigenous automatic train protection system, to enhance rail safety. For higher-speed operations, Kavach 5.0 will support train operations at 350 kmph, ensuring advanced signaling and accident prevention measures.
Highlighting India’s commitment to green technology, a 2400-horsepower hydrogen-powered train developed entirely domestically was also unveiled. This initiative reflects the country’s focus on sustainable rail innovation, reducing carbon emissions while integrating cutting-edge propulsion technologies.
The development of Vande Bharat 4.0 positions India as a global leader in high-speed train technology, combining advanced engineering, passenger-centric design, and sustainable operations. It demonstrates India’s ability to innovate in the railway sector, enhance domestic mobility, and expand into international markets by exporting high-tech trainsets.
In summary, India’s Vande Bharat 4.0 initiative marks a significant milestone in railway modernization, with enhanced speed, safety, comfort, and green technology integration. With rollout planned within 18 months, upgraded Amrit Bharat trains, high-speed corridors, and hydrogen-powered innovations, India is set to strengthen both domestic rail infrastructure and its export capabilities in the global rail sector.
