What's covered under the Article:

  • India strongly responds to Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir’s nuclear threats, warning that any misadventure will be met with painful consequences as seen during Operation Sindoor.

  • The MEA condemns Pakistan’s “nuclear sabre-rattling” and accuses Islamabad of using anti-India rhetoric to distract from its domestic failures.

  • India also rejects references to the Indus Water Treaty by Pakistan and highlights growing India–US defence cooperation, including the upcoming Yudh Abhyas exercise in Alaska.

India issued a stern warning to Pakistan on Thursday after Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir made provocative remarks during his recent US visit, reportedly threatening retaliatory action if faced with what he deemed an existential threat from India. Speaking at a press conference, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the statements, describing them as part of a reckless and dangerous pattern of anti-India rhetoric frequently used by Islamabad to divert attention from its internal governance and economic failures.

Jaiswal made it clear that India will not tolerate any threats or acts of aggression, especially nuclear intimidation, stressing that “any misadventure from Pakistan will have painful consequences, as was demonstrated recently during Operation Sindoor.” The reference was to India’s strong retaliatory response during the May 2025 military standoff, when Indian forces carried out precision strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack.

India’s statement comes after Pakistan’s foreign ministry tried to defend Munir’s comments, which included a controversial claim that Pakistan could “take half the world down” in the event of a nuclear conflict. India called such nuclear sabre-rattling irresponsible and destabilizing, warning that these statements from a military institution “hand-in-glove with terrorist groups” raise serious concerns about the safety and control of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal.

India also expressed displeasure at the fact that Munir made such remarks “on the soil of a friendly third country”, undermining regional peace and global norms.

In addition to the warning, the MEA addressed other key issues:

  • On the Indus Water Treaty, India reiterated that it does not accept the legality or jurisdiction of the Court of Arbitration’s ruling, noting that the treaty remains in abeyance as a sovereign decision in response to Pakistan’s continued cross-border terrorism.

  • On India–US defence ties, the MEA described the bilateral defence partnership as a strategic pillar, supported by foundational agreements and growing cooperation across domains. A US Defence Policy Team is expected in Delhi in mid-August, and the 21st edition of joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas will be held later this month in Alaska. India and the US are also working to convene the 2+2 Intersessional meeting at working level by the end of the month.

India’s firm message underscores its zero tolerance for intimidation or terrorism and its readiness to take decisive action to protect its national interests. The government has made it clear that continued provocation from Pakistan will not deter India from maintaining regional security and asserting its sovereign rights.
