What's covered under the Article:

  1. Indian Army foils infiltration bid at LoC in Akhnoor, Jammu and Kashmir, during a night operation in Keri Battal forest area on April 11.

  2. JCO Subedar Kuldeep Chand of 9 Punjab Regiment was martyred while leading the counter-infiltration operation.

  3. Area sealed off post encounter, search operations launched, and Indian Army raises strong protest with Pakistani forces.

In a tragic yet heroic turn of events, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army was martyred during an intense encounter along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir on April 11, 2025. The incident occurred late at night when Army personnel detected the movement of heavily armed terrorists near a stream in the Keri Bhattal forest area, located in the forward zone of Sunderbani.

The Indian Army immediately challenged the infiltrators, resulting in a prolonged and fierce exchange of fire. The terrorists, attempting to breach the LoC, were met with strong resistance from the Army personnel, but the fight came at a heavy cost. The martyred soldier, identified as Subedar Kuldeep Chand, a dedicated member of the 9 Punjab Regiment under the White Knight Corps, sustained severe injuries during the encounter and later succumbed to his wounds.

Subedar Kuldeep Chand's sacrifice was a testament to his bravery and commitment. The Army expressed its deep gratitude and reverence for his ultimate sacrifice. A post on X (formerly Twitter) by the GOC White Knight Corps stated, “GOC WhiteKnightCorps and all ranks salute the supreme sacrifice of Braveheart Sub Kuldeep Chand of 9 PUNJAB. He laid down his life while gallantly leading a counter-infiltration operation along the Line of Control in the Keri-Battal area of Sunderbani on the night of 11 April.”

The incident is part of a continued surge in cross-border terrorism and infiltration bids along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. In February 2025, a similar incident had occurred in the same region, when two Army personnel, including a captain, lost their lives due to an IED blast orchestrated by terrorists. The Indian Army has been on high alert to combat these growing threats, with the area around the Akhnoor sector now sealed off and a search operation underway. Reinforcements have been dispatched to ensure that no further threats remain in the region.

The significance of this incident is also heightened by the fact that it follows closely on the heels of a brigade commander-level flag meeting that was held between Indian and Pakistani forces in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, just two days prior. The meeting, which aimed at discussing border management, de-escalation of tensions, and cross-border violations, now takes on a more critical tone. During the meeting, the Indian Army raised serious concerns about the continuing cross-border terror activities and violations of the ceasefire agreement.

The ceasefire agreement, which was reaffirmed by both nations in February 2021, had led to a decrease in violations along the LoC. However, this recent infiltration attempt and the consequent deadly encounter show that tensions remain high. The last major border violation had occurred on April 5, 2025, when Border Security Force (BSF) personnel shot dead a Pakistani intruder along the International Border in the R S Pura sector.

The situation remains precarious, with both sides continuing to hold discussions aimed at reducing violence, though incidents of this nature remain a concerning reality. While the Indian Army continues to be vigilant and proactive, the ultimate sacrifice of brave personnel like Subedar Kuldeep Chand is a stark reminder of the challenges faced along the LoC.

In conclusion, the Akhnoor encounter exemplifies the ongoing security risks faced by our forces in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly along the LoC, where cross-border terrorism is a constant threat. The loss of Subedar Kuldeep Chand is deeply mourned, but his heroism will not be forgotten. The Indian Army and its personnel remain resolute in their commitment to protecting the nation’s borders and foiling any attempts to compromise national security.

The incident also highlights the ongoing struggle to maintain peace and security in the region amidst rising tensions and occasional ceasefire violations. The Army’s continued efforts and sacrifices underscore the importance of border security and the constant vigilance required to prevent infiltration and terrorism along the Line of Control.
