  • Lt Gen Sumer Ivan D'Cunha warns that all of Pakistan, including GHQ, lies within India’s military strike range if provoked.

  • India conducted successful precision strikes during Operation Sindoor, targeting Pakistani airbases and key installations.

  • Pakistan's drone attack foiled by India’s Army, Navy, and Air Force with all UCAVs carrying weapons intercepted and destroyed.

In a strong message to Pakistan, Lieutenant General Sumer Ivan D'Cunha, Director General of the Indian Army’s Air Defence, stated that India possesses the capability to carry out precision strikes anywhere within Pakistani territory if required. Speaking on May 20, 2025, Lt Gen D'Cunha emphasized that the entire breadth and depth of Pakistan is within India’s military strike range, underscoring the country’s enhanced defence capabilities.

He remarked that even if Pakistan decides to shift its General Headquarters (GHQ) from Rawalpindi to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) or any other location, it would still be vulnerable to Indian strikes. “They will have to find a very deep hole to hide,” Lt Gen D'Cunha said, highlighting India’s overwhelming reach.

Operation Sindoor and Precision Strikes

During the recent military conflict between the two nations, India launched Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes targeting key Pakistani terror infrastructure and military installations. Indian forces hit multiple Pakistani airbases close to the border and inflicted significant damage to air defence systems, command centres, and radar sites.

The operation relied heavily on modern indigenous technology, including long-range drones, loitering munitions, and guided weaponry, showcasing India's evolving defence manufacturing and strategic capabilities. The Defence Minister noted that the impacts of these strikes were felt deep inside Rawalpindi, Pakistan’s army headquarters, underscoring the precision and depth of Indian military reach.

Foiling Pakistan’s Drone Assault

Lt Gen D'Cunha also detailed Pakistan’s large-scale drone assault during the conflict. Over four days, Pakistan launched approximately 800 to 1,000 drones across the western border, many of which were armed Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) aimed at civilian population centres.

Thanks to coordinated interception efforts by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, all weapon-carrying drones were destroyed before they could cause harm. The general confirmed that there were no civilian casualties, illustrating the effectiveness of India’s air defence systems.

Background and Ceasefire Agreement

The conflict escalation began after a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, prompting India to conduct early May precision strikes against terror infrastructure under Operation Sindoor. Pakistan retaliated with attempts to strike Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10, which were decisively countered by India’s armed forces.

The hostilities concluded when Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced on May 10 that India and Pakistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire along the land, air, and sea borders, halting all military actions.

Strategic Implications

Lt Gen D'Cunha’s remarks signal India’s strong strategic posture and technological edge in regional security dynamics. India’s ability to deliver precision strikes deep inside Pakistan serves as a deterrent against hostile actions and underlines the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its borders.

The successful neutralisation of drone threats also highlights the evolving nature of modern warfare and the importance of integrated air defence capabilities in protecting civilian lives and critical infrastructure.
