What's covered under the Article:
- Indian aviation surpassed 500,000 daily domestic passengers for the first time on Sunday.
- Post-Diwali travel and wedding season demand boosted November's passenger surge.
- Fleet constraints and airport congestion hinder aviation sector's growth potential.
India’s aviation sector achieved a remarkable milestone on Sunday, setting a record of 505,412 domestic passengers on 3,173 flights, marking the first time the nation has surpassed the 500,000 passengers-a-day threshold. This historic achievement reflects India’s resilience and robust recovery post-pandemic, highlighting the sector’s ability to adapt to growing demands despite facing operational challenges.
November has witnessed several record-breaking days, with daily passenger numbers ranging from 490,000 to 499,000. This surge contrasts with the typically subdued travel trends in October, where post-Diwali travel tapered off. The wedding season and festive gatherings have emerged as key contributors to the November boom, driving higher bookings and load factors for airlines.
Airline Performance Amid Challenges
India's largest carrier, IndiGo, recently reported a loss in Q2 2024, ending its streak of seven consecutive profitable quarters. The airline attributed the loss to a normalisation of previously elevated yields, a factor impacting overall revenue growth. Despite these challenges, IndiGo remains a dominant player in the market, contributing significantly to the record-breaking passenger numbers.
The average daily flights in November stood at 3,161, a slight increase from October. However, the sector still lags behind peak levels observed during the Diwali travel period. Limited fleet expansion has been a key bottleneck, with challenges such as the Boeing strike affecting Akasa Air and Air India Express, constraining carriers’ ability to add new flights.
Post-Diwali Fare Sales Drive Demand
Airlines have actively promoted post-Diwali fare sales, boosting ticket prices and load factors. These sales highlight the strong demand for domestic travel, supported by India’s growing middle-class population and increasing disposable incomes. However, major airports’ congestion has posed significant challenges, leading to delays, higher operational costs, and disruptions. Hoax security threats have further exacerbated the situation, with flight diversions adding to airlines’ operational burdens. As a result, carriers may pass these increased costs on to passengers in the form of higher fares.
Air India-Vistara Merger and Metro Route Enhancements
A significant development in India’s aviation landscape is the merger of Vistara with Air India on November 12, a strategic move to enhance capacity on metro routes. The introduction of larger aircraft like the Dreamliner has increased seating capacity on these critical routes, catering to growing passenger demand. Despite these enhancements, the sector’s growth has remained constrained, with India’s aviation growth currently at around 5%, significantly lower than its usual rate of double GDP growth.
The Road Ahead: Infrastructure and Growth
Upcoming infrastructure projects, including new airports in Delhi and Mumbai, are expected to alleviate current capacity constraints and facilitate further expansion of India’s aviation sector. These projects are crucial for enabling sustainable growth, particularly as the country continues its economic development trajectory.
This record-breaking milestone underscores the resilience of India’s aviation sector in the face of challenges. It also highlights the industry’s potential for sustained growth, supported by strategic initiatives and infrastructure development.
