In a remarkable display of international cooperation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), along with the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA), successfully rescued 12 crew members from a merchant ship that sank in the North Arabian Sea on December 4, 2024. The vessel, MSV AI Piranpir, was on its journey from Porbandar, Gujarat, to Bandar Abbas port in Iran, when it encountered rough sea conditions that led to its sinking.
The distress call was received by the ICG’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai, alerting authorities about the emergency. The ship sank outside Indian waters but within Pakistan’s search and rescue region. The ICG immediately sprang into action by deploying the ICG ship Sarthak to the location, with support from a PMSA aircraft and the merchant ship MV Cosco Glory, which helped in the search for survivors.
Both the Indian Coast Guard and the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency worked closely throughout the operation, maintaining constant communication through their respective Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCC). The ICG ship Sarthak carried out a thorough search, and the efforts of both nations resulted in the rescue of all 12 crew members.
The rescued sailors underwent medical evaluations and were reported to be in good health, despite the ordeal. The survivors are now being transported back to Porbandar Harbour, with the process of bringing them home underway.
