The Indian Embassy in Panama has confirmed that Indian deportees arriving in Panama from the United States are safe and secure. Following a report that nearly 100 Indian nationals were deported by the US and moved to a detention camp on the outskirts of a jungle, the embassy took swift action, obtaining consular access to the group. The Indian government has assured the public that it is working closely with Panama authorities to ensure the well-being of the deportees.

Safety and Security of Indian Migrants in Panama

In a post shared on X, the Indian Embassy clarified that the deportees were safe and secure at a hotel, equipped with all essential facilities. "The embassy team has obtained consular access and is working closely with Panama to ensure their well-being," the post read. The embassy also underscored that Panama authorities have been transparent in their handling of the situation.

Panama Government’s Stance on the Migrant Camp

Carlos Ruiz-Hernandez, Panama's Deputy Foreign Minister, clarified that the migrants were not detainees, but rather were temporarily housed in a migrant camp. He assured that the camp was the best option available for the migrants and that it provided food, water, and medical care. Ruiz-Hernandez further emphasized that the migrants were treated humanely, and no cages were used, countering any reports of mistreatment.

Context of the US Deportation Efforts

This development comes amidst a broader initiative by President Donald Trump's administration to crack down on illegal immigration. As part of the initiative, the US has been deporting undocumented migrants to their home countries, with Panama agreeing to take in migrants who were unable to stay in the US.

The group of 300 migrants, which included the 97 Indians, were part of a weeklong saga where deportees were moved from the US to Panama as part of a deportation program. The Indian government has been actively monitoring the situation, and on February 16, another batch of Indian nationals was returned to India, landing at Amritsar Airport.

The Indian Embassy has also reassured the families of the deported migrants, confirming that the group is receiving the necessary care and attention while the Indian government continues its cooperation with Panama for further assistance. The situation reflects the growing diplomatic dialogue between the two countries as they handle the migration crisis amid evolving US immigration policies.
