The Gaza conflict has once again taken centre stage in Indian political discourse, with Opposition MPs in Parliament condemning the Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip and calling for the revival of the long-dormant India-Palestine Committee. The demand comes at a time when international pressure is mounting on Israel to halt its strikes, which have caused extensive civilian casualties and destruction.
During a press briefing and parliamentary interactions, Palestine Ambassador Abu Shawesh urged India to take a more proactive stance in supporting Palestine. He specifically recommended the reactivation of the India-Palestine Committee in the Indian Parliament, a body that historically played a role in fostering bilateral ties and political solidarity. According to him, reviving this platform could strengthen India's diplomatic engagement and reaffirm its traditional support for the Palestinian cause.
Opposition leaders have argued that India, as a nation with historical links to the Non-Aligned Movement and a long-standing supporter of Palestinian self-determination, should not remain passive in the face of escalating violence. They have stressed that the situation in Gaza—marked by widespread destruction, displacement of families, and mounting death tolls—warrants a strong moral and political response.
The Gaza-Israel conflict has sparked widespread condemnation worldwide, with the United Nations, humanitarian agencies, and media groups calling for an immediate ceasefire. The Indian Opposition’s position aligns with global appeals for peace, humanitarian aid access, and diplomatic engagement.
Revival of the India-Palestine Committee could facilitate parliamentary discussions, exchange visits, and coordinated diplomatic messaging, thereby strengthening India’s voice in international platforms. Proponents argue that such a move would not only signal solidarity with the Palestinian people but also reflect India’s balanced foreign policy approach—one that seeks to maintain relations with Israel while upholding the rights of Palestinians.
Historically, India was among the first non-Arab nations to recognise the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and establish diplomatic missions. The parliamentary committee, when active, served as a bridge for dialogue and solidarity campaigns. However, in recent years, the committee has been inactive, with India’s diplomatic engagements focusing more on strategic and economic ties with Israel.
Ambassador Abu Shawesh emphasised that the reactivation of this committee would be a symbolic yet powerful gesture at a time when Gaza’s humanitarian crisis is worsening. He expressed hope that India’s leadership, both in government and opposition, would work together to promote dialogue, peace, and justice.
The call for revival is also being seen as a test of India’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy and its historical position on the Palestinian question. With the death toll in Gaza rising daily and reports of infrastructure collapse, health crises, and food shortages, the urgency for renewed diplomatic initiatives is undeniable.
Opposition MPs have also hinted at raising the issue in the upcoming Parliament session, potentially pushing for a resolution that would place India’s stance firmly on the side of a two-state solution and respect for international law.
If India moves forward with this revival, it could restore an important channel of political communication and send a clear message to the global community that India stands for peace, justice, and humanitarian values—principles that have guided its foreign policy for decades.
