India's international travel market has experienced a remarkable surge, with the number of Indians taking two or more international trips increasing by 32% over the past year. According to MakeMyTrip’s ‘How India Travels Abroad’ report for June 2023 to May 2024, the UAE, Thailand, and the USA are the leading destinations for Indian travelers. This significant rise in travel is attributed to increased disposable incomes, greater global exposure, and easier travel arrangements.

Mr. Rajesh Magow, co-founder and Group CEO of MakeMyTrip, highlighted that the surge is a result of shifting dynamics in international travel behavior driven by macroeconomic factors. This presents new opportunities for the travel industry to adapt and cater to evolving consumer preferences.

The report reveals that international travel search volumes remain steady throughout the year, with December emerging as the peak month for travel searches. The October-December quarter sees the highest interest in short-haul destinations, while April to September is preferred for mid and long-haul travel. Leading regions for international travel searches include Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Delhi. Among student travelers, the UK, Australia, and Germany are top choices, reflecting a continued interest in education abroad.

Emerging destinations are gaining traction, with searches for Almaty and Baku increasing significantly by 527% and 395%, respectively. This indicates a growing curiosity and interest in exploring less conventional locations.

Leisure travel continues to dominate, accounting for 55% of international trips, with Thailand maintaining its position as the top leisure destination. At the same time, South Asian destinations like Pokhara and Pattaya are favored for budget stays, reflecting diverse travel preferences across different segments.
