India’s Domestic Air Traffic Reaches 161.3 Million in 2024, Continues to Show Positive Growth
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s domestic air passenger traffic grew by 6.12% in 2024, reaching a record 161.3 million passengers. This follows the significant 23.36% year-on-year (YoY) growth in 2023, indicating a continued recovery in the aviation sector post-pandemic.

The increase in domestic passenger traffic is a reflection of India’s expanding aviation market, which has seen higher demand for air travel as the economy rebounds and consumer confidence rises. In 2024, IndiGo, India’s largest airline, maintained its dominance in the domestic market, capturing 61.9% of the market share, up from 60.5% in 2023. IndiGo carried 99.9 million passengers during the year, further cementing its position as the market leader.

SpiceJet and Air India Group Performance
On the other hand, SpiceJet witnessed a decline in market share, dropping from 5.5% to 3.7% in 2024, with only six million passengers flown. Despite facing challenges, the airline remains a part of the competitive landscape in India’s aviation sector.

The Air India Group, which includes Air India, Air India Express, and Vistara (which merged with Air India in November 2024), also experienced growth in passenger traffic. The Group carried a total of 45.8 million passengers in 2024, up from 39.49 million in 2023. This increase is attributed to the growing fleet and improved operational performance.

As part of its ongoing expansion plans, the Air India Group operates around 300 commercial aircraft and has placed an order for 570 new aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. The Group expects to grow its fleet to 400 planes within the next three years, aiming to solidify its position in both domestic and international markets.

On-Time Performance
In terms of on-time performance (OTP), IndiGo led with a 73.4% OTP in December 2024. The Air India Group followed with a 67.6% OTP, showing improvement in operational efficiency. These figures highlight the ongoing efforts by airlines to enhance customer experience through better punctuality and service reliability.

Looking Ahead
With the aviation sector continuing to recover and expand, India’s domestic air passenger traffic is set to maintain its upward trajectory. The growing fleet sizes, ongoing mergers, and technological advancements promise a competitive environment, offering consumers more choices and better connectivity.

This positive growth in the aviation sector is expected to drive further investments in infrastructure, technology, and service improvements in the coming years.
