The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) recently achieved a significant milestone by facilitating the inaugural consignment of Indian pomegranates from Mumbai to Melbourne, Australia, on August 31, 2024. This historic event underscores India's commitment to adhering to global quality standards and opens up new revenue opportunities for Indian farmers. The consignment was successfully cleared in Melbourne and prominently showcased at Fine Food Australia 2024 at the APEDA India pavilion, further enhancing the international appeal of Indian pomegranates.

Australia granted market access to Indian pomegranates in 2020, laying the groundwork for this successful export. In February 2024, a comprehensive work plan and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for pomegranate exports to Australia were formalized, streamlining the process and ensuring the adherence to rigorous quality standards. This initiative highlights APEDA's role in fostering trade relations and supporting Indian agricultural exports.

India, being the second-largest producer of horticulture crops, primarily grows pomegranates in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh. In FY24, India exported a total of 72,011 metric tons of pomegranates, valued at US$ 69.08 million, to various markets, including the UAE, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands. The successful shipment to Australia represents a new avenue for Indian pomegranate exports, reflecting the sector's growth and the expanding global reach of Indian produce.

APEDA's initiatives are pivotal in promoting fresh fruit and vegetable exports. These include developing sea protocols to maintain product quality and establishing Export Promotion Forums (EPF) to address supply chain challenges. The consignment, sent by M/s. Kay Bee Exports, consisted of 336 boxes weighing 1.1 metric tons, packed at an Australia-approved facility in Ahmednagar and treated at MSAMB IFC in Vashi.

As a Statutory Body under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, APEDA plays a crucial role in promoting Indian agro and processed food exports through B2B exhibitions, market exploration, and collaborations with Indian Embassies. The successful export of pomegranates to Australia marks a significant achievement for Indian agriculture, demonstrating the sector’s growing international presence and the effective support provided by APEDA.
