A new report by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), supported by Danfoss India, forecasts robust growth for India's domestic food market, projecting a remarkable 47% increase to reach US$ 1,274 billion by 2027. The report, titled 'Food Processing Sector in India - Potential for Southern States', was released at CII-FoodPro 2024 and offers a comprehensive analysis of the evolving food processing landscape in India, with a particular focus on the southern states.
According to the report, the food processing industry is experiencing a transformation driven by technological advancements and innovative startups. These emerging enterprises are introducing cutting-edge technologies that are setting new benchmarks for safety and quality, which is expected to elevate India's standing in the global food market.
One of the standout findings is the significant role of the southern states in the food processing sector. Tamil Nadu is particularly notable for its contributions to the export of processed foods. The state leads India in the export of processed fruits, juices, and nuts, accounting for 33% by quantity and 27% by value. In the fiscal year 2023-24, Tamil Nadu exported 208,370 metric tonnes of processed foods valued at US$ 220.81 million, underscoring its pivotal role in the sector.
Mr. Ravichandran Purushothaman, Chairman of CII National Council for Cold Chain and Agri Logistics, emphasized that the food processing industry in South India is on the brink of a significant transformation. He highlighted that innovative segments such as millets, ready-to-eat products, and plant-based dairy alternatives offer substantial economic opportunities for farmers and businesses alike. These segments are poised to drive growth and attract investments in the region.
The report underscores the crucial role of technology in this growth trajectory. It asserts that adopting advanced technological solutions is essential for maintaining high standards of safety and quality, which in turn will enhance India's export capabilities and global market presence.
