What's Covered Under the Article:
- Expansion of India's national highways to 146,000 km, with expressways like Delhi-Mumbai set for completion.
- Shift from project-based to corridor-based development for quality and logistics efficiency.
- Introduction of satellite navigation for toll collection and investment in maritime infrastructure.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is accelerating its efforts to transform India’s road infrastructure, with a focus on completing several expressway projects by 2025. Over the past decade, MoRTH has substantially expanded India’s National Highways (NHs) network, increasing its length from 91,000 km in 2013-14 to 146,000 km in the present. However, the ministry is now pivoting to ensuring that future projects maintain high construction quality, an initiative that is vital for safer travel and smoother transportation for the growing number of road users.
Expansion and Improvement of National Highways
The national highways network has seen significant expansion under MoRTH’s leadership, contributing to better connectivity across the nation. Notably, the Delhi-Jaipur section (NH-48) and the Amritsar-Jamnagar Economic Corridor are under focus to enhance quality and meet user demands. The newly appointed Highways Secretary, V Umashankar, has emphasized that future highway projects will prioritize quality, alongside expansion.
Key Expressway Projects
Some of the major expressway projects expected to be completed by 2025 include the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, and the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway. These expressways are expected to reduce congestion, significantly cut down travel time, and improve the overall user experience. The new infrastructure will not only improve accessibility but will also promote economic activities by connecting major commercial hubs.
Corridor-Based Highway Development
To ensure consistency and quality in its projects, MoRTH is shifting from a project-based development model to a more comprehensive corridor-based model. This approach will focus on developing efficient, high-speed highway corridors across India, ensuring a better logistics network and improved user convenience. Leveraging data from the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) and toll data, MoRTH has identified 50,000 km of highway corridors, with 4,827 km of these expected to be operational by the end of the fiscal year.
Technological Integration in Toll Collection
MoRTH is also working on integrating satellite navigation technology to introduce a multi-party interoperable toll collection system. This barrier-free system will simplify toll transactions, reducing travel delays and improving overall road efficiency. The move will play a key role in streamlining road transport and ensuring that travelers face fewer obstacles on their journey.
Focus on Maritime Infrastructure
In addition to road projects, the Indian government is also strengthening its maritime infrastructure, with major projects like the Vadhavan Port and upgrades to the Kandla, Tuticorin, and Galathea Bay Transshipment Hub. These projects are set to boost India’s maritime capabilities and further enhance the port and shipping industry, complementing the improvements in road transport.
Sustainability and Future Growth
MoRTH's comprehensive plans reflect a commitment to quality, transparency, and sustainability. As India’s transportation network undergoes a transformation, these initiatives will pave the way for long-term economic growth and provide improved infrastructure for the coming generations.
