India’s Smartphone Export Growth: Breaking Records

The rapid growth of India’s mobile exports is evident in its quarterly performance:

  • Q1 FY25: Exports reached ₹42,137 crore (US$ 4.85 billion), up 30% from Q1 FY24.
  • H1 FY25: Exports totaled ₹72,979 crore (US$ 8.4 billion), increasing 30% from H1 FY24.

Since October 2024, India has been consistently exporting over ₹17,376 crore (US$ 2 billion) per month, compared to previous peaks of ₹14,248 crore (US$ 1.64 billion) in FY23 and ₹16,507 crore (US$ 1.9 billion) in FY24.

Apple Dominates Smartphone Exports

Apple Inc. is the biggest contributor, accounting for ₹1,25,000 crore (US$ 14.39 billion), with iPhone exports comprising nearly 70% of total smartphone exports. The majority of Apple’s production comes from Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and Pegatron, which together accounted for 70% of exports.

Meanwhile, Samsung and Indian smartphone brands are also increasing their export contributions.

Key Export Markets: US and Europe Lead the Way

India’s top smartphone export destinations include the United States and Europe, with around 50–55% of shipments heading to the US. Smartphones have now become India’s largest export to the US, surpassing non-industrial diamonds under the Harmonised System classification.

Government's Focus: Strengthening the Smartphone Industry

The Indian government is actively working to enhance value addition in smartphone manufacturing. A new Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme is under consideration to support domestic micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and integrate them into the global smartphone supply chain.

The PLI scheme is expected to:

  • Increase local sourcing of smartphone components, reducing dependence on imports.
  • Enhance India's role in global electronics manufacturing, making the country a key export hub.
  • Attract more foreign investment, driving growth in the "Make in India" initiative.

Conclusion: India’s Smartphone Industry on a Strong Growth Path

India’s record-breaking smartphone exports showcase its emergence as a global electronics hub. With Apple, Samsung, and Indian brands scaling up production, and strong government support through PLI schemes, the smartphone industry is poised for further growth.

As India continues to expand its presence in global markets, its export-driven manufacturing sector is set to drive economic growth, create jobs, and strengthen its position in the global technology ecosystem.
