India has seen impressive growth in its textile exports during the first half of FY25, with the sector recording an increase of 7%, reaching Rs. 1.83 lakh crore (US$ 21.35 billion). This is a notable improvement from the Rs. 1.71 lakh crore (US$ 20 billion) reported during the same period last year (FY24). The textile and apparel sector, which includes both handicrafts and finished goods, has been one of India's strong economic pillars. The export growth was driven largely by the Ready-Made Garments (RMG) category, which accounted for 41% of the total textile exports, valued at Rs. 74,868 crore (US$ 8.73 billion).

In the breakdown of other textile segments, Cotton Textiles contributed Rs. 60,718 crore (US$ 7.08 billion), making up 33% of the exports, while Man-Made Textiles followed with exports of Rs. 26,586 crore (US$ 3.1 billion), contributing 15%. This demonstrates the diversified nature of India's textile sector, catering to both traditional cotton textiles and the growing demand for man-made fiber products globally.

On the import front, the Man-Made textiles category saw the largest share of imports, accounting for 34% of total textile imports during the period. Imports of Cotton Textiles also increased, particularly long staple cotton fiber, as India looks to enhance its domestic production capacity amid growing demand and consumption.

India remains a key player in global textile trade, despite a decline in imports over the past year. In FY24, the country’s textile and apparel imports fell by nearly 15%, totaling Rs. 76,669 crore (US$ 8.94 billion), compared to Rs. 89,876 crore (US$ 10.48 billion) in FY23. Despite this reduction in imports, India has maintained its position as the sixth-largest exporter of textiles globally as of 2023, with its textile exports accounting for a significant 8.21% of the global share.

The USA and the European Union are the major export destinations for Indian textiles, with India maintaining a trade surplus in the sector. This surplus, coupled with strong export growth, underscores the competitiveness of India’s textile sector on the world stage.

The growth in textile exports during April-October FY25 highlights India’s strengthening position in the global market. The country’s textile industry is increasingly seen as a hub for both quality and quantity, attracting buyers from around the world. India’s strategic focus on enhancing manufacturing capabilities, improving technology adoption, and strengthening trade relations with key global partners has contributed to this positive growth trajectory.
