The Central Water Commission (CWC) has released its latest report on India’s water storage levels as of August 29, 2024, revealing a significant improvement in the nation’s water resources. The current live storage stands at 144.333 billion cubic meters (BCM), which is approximately 80% of the total reservoir capacity. This represents a 126% increase compared to the same period last year and 119% of the 10-year average or Normal storage.

National Overview:

The overall water storage situation across the 155 monitored reservoirs, including 20 hydroelectric projects, indicates a generally favorable scenario. These reservoirs have a combined capacity of 180.852 BCM, accounting for around 70.15% of the nation’s total estimated live storage capacity. This increase highlights a positive trend in water availability and management.

Regional Variations:

Northern Region: This area, including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan, has experienced a decline in water storage, currently at 60% of its capacity. This is a significant drop from 83% last year, indicating potential concerns for these states' water resources.

Eastern Region: The Eastern region, which includes Assam, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, has seen notable improvement. Water storage is now at 66% of capacity, up from 46% last year, reflecting better rainfall and management practices in this region.

Western Region: Gujarat and Maharashtra in the Western region are holding 90% of their capacity, a considerable improvement from 71% last year. This suggests effective utilization and management of water resources in these states.

Central Region: The Central region, encompassing Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, shows a positive trend with 84% of storage capacity, indicating improved water management.

Southern Region: Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in the Southern region have achieved substantial gains, with storage at 82% of capacity. This is indicative of favorable conditions and effective water resource management in these states.

River Basin Analysis:

Improved Storage: The river basins of Ganga, Mahanadi, Narmada, and Godavari report better-than-normal storage levels. This improvement supports agricultural and industrial activities in these regions and enhances overall water availability.

Deficient Storage: In contrast, the Indus river basin and East Flowing Rivers between Pennar and Kanyakumari are categorized as deficient. This suggests ongoing challenges in these areas, potentially impacting local water supply and agricultural productivity.
