India is emerging as a key player in the global wind energy industry, leveraging its robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and strong policy framework. According to Girish Tanti, Vice Chairman of Suzlon Energy Ltd, India has the potential to become a global hub for wind turbine manufacturing, supplying high-quality components to international markets. The Union Budget 2025-26 has proposed a National Manufacturing Mission, aimed at promoting clean energy equipment production, which could be a game-changer for the industry.
Strong Local Manufacturing Base and Export Potential
One of India’s biggest advantages in the wind energy sector is its high local content, which currently stands at 64%. This is significantly higher than the 20% local content in solar projects, making wind energy a key pillar of India’s renewable energy ambitions. With over 2,500 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) supporting wind energy production, the country is well-positioned to supply up to 10% of global wind energy demand by 2030.
India already exports wind turbines and blades to major markets such as the United States, Australia, and Brazil. The country has an annual wind energy production capacity of 18 gigawatts (GW), positioning itself as a leading manufacturer in the sector.
The Need for Policy Support and Fiscal Incentives
While India’s wind energy manufacturing sector is growing, experts emphasize the need for additional fiscal support to maintain its momentum. Girish Tanti highlighted the importance of a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, similar to the one provided for solar module manufacturing, to encourage further investment in the sector.
The National Manufacturing Mission, introduced in the Union Budget 2025-26, focuses on boosting domestic production of clean tech equipment, including wind turbines. This initiative will not only strengthen India’s domestic value chain but also enhance its competitiveness in global markets.
Challenges and Opportunities in the Sector
Despite its strong position, India’s wind energy local content has dropped from 75% a decade ago to 64% today. This decline underscores the need for renewed focus on domestic manufacturing and increased government incentives to sustain growth.
Suzlon Energy, one of India’s leading wind energy companies, remains committed to developing wind energy components while exploring hybrid energy solutions and round-the-clock renewable power to meet growing demand.
The Future of India’s Wind Energy Industry
With the right policy support, financial incentives, and strategic investments, India has the potential to become a global leader in wind turbine manufacturing. The country’s strong manufacturing ecosystem, skilled workforce, and export capabilities make it an attractive destination for wind energy investments.
As India gears up to become a renewable energy powerhouse, investors and businesses looking to capitalize on the green energy transition should keep a close eye on developments in the wind energy sector.
