-
IndiGo announced a fuel surcharge ranging from Rs 425 to Rs 2,300 per sector starting March 14 due to rising fuel prices.
-
The price hike follows crude oil touching $100 per barrel amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
-
Air India had earlier introduced a fuel surcharge as airlines struggle with increasing aviation fuel costs.
India’s largest airline IndiGo has announced a fuel surcharge ranging from ₹425 to ₹2,300 per sector for its flights, making air travel costlier for passengers starting March 14, 2026.
The decision comes amid the escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have pushed global crude oil prices to nearly $100 per barrel, significantly increasing operational costs for airlines.
With this move, **IndiGo becomes the second major Indian airline after Air India to introduce a fuel surcharge in response to the surge in aviation fuel prices.
Fuel Surcharge Effective from March 14
According to the airline, the new surcharge will come into effect at 00:01 hours on March 14 and will apply to all new flight bookings.
The charges will vary depending on the route and distance of travel.
Fuel surcharge per sector:
| Route | Fuel Charge |
|---|---|
| Domestic routes within India | ₹425 |
| Indian subcontinent | ₹425 |
| Middle East | ₹900 |
| Southeast Asia and China | ₹1,800 |
| Africa and West Asia | ₹1,800 |
| Europe | ₹2,300 |
These additional costs will be added per sector, meaning passengers on connecting flights could pay the surcharge multiple times.
Crude Oil Prices Behind the Fare Increase
Airlines worldwide are currently facing rising fuel expenses due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
According to data cited by the airline from the International Air Transport Association Jet Fuel Monitor, fuel prices in the region have risen by more than 85 per cent in recent months.
This surge in prices has significantly affected airline operating costs.
Aviation Fuel a Major Cost for Airlines
One of the biggest expenses for airlines is Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), which can account for 30–40 per cent of total operating costs.
The sharp spike in crude oil prices has made it increasingly difficult for airlines to absorb the additional financial burden.
In its statement, IndiGo said that while the increase in fuel prices would normally require a much higher adjustment in ticket fares, the airline has chosen to introduce a “relatively small fuel surcharge” instead of passing the entire cost increase onto passengers.
Air India Introduced Similar Charge Earlier
Earlier this week, Air India also announced a fuel surcharge on flight tickets.
The airline confirmed that ₹399 would be added to domestic flight tickets starting March 12, with further adjustments expected for international routes.
According to the airline, the surcharge is part of a phased plan to deal with rising operational costs, especially fuel expenses.
Impact on Air Travellers
The surcharge means that passengers booking flights with IndiGo from March 14 onward will see higher ticket prices depending on their route and travel distance.
For example:
-
Domestic travellers will pay ₹425 extra per sector
-
Passengers travelling to Europe may pay up to ₹2,300 additional surcharge
Industry analysts say such measures are common when fuel prices spike sharply due to geopolitical tensions.
Global Aviation Industry Under Pressure
The current situation highlights how global conflicts can directly affect airline ticket prices.
The ongoing tensions in West Asia have disrupted energy markets, leading to higher crude oil and aviation fuel prices worldwide.
For airlines, which operate on tight margins, fuel cost spikes often force companies to adjust ticket prices or introduce temporary surcharges.
Conclusion
With the introduction of a fuel surcharge up to ₹2,300 per sector, IndiGo has joined other airlines in responding to the sharp rise in fuel prices caused by geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
While the airline says it has tried to keep the surcharge limited, passengers can expect higher airfare costs across both domestic and international routes until fuel prices stabilise.
The development also reflects how global energy market fluctuations continue to influence the aviation industry and travel costs in India.
