IndiGo Leads Indian Domestic Airlines as Passenger Numbers Show Growth in June

In June 2024, Indian domestic airlines continued to showcase resilience and growth, with a total of 1.32 crore passengers flying across the country, marking a significant increase from previous months.
IndiGo's Market Dominance
IndiGo, India's largest airline by fleet size and market share, retained its dominant position, albeit with a slight decline in market share to 60.8% from 61.6% in May. The airline carried 80.30 lakh passengers, reflecting a marginal decrease compared to the preceding month.
Air India's Strategic Gains
Following closely, Air India, under Tata Sons ownership, strengthened its market presence, capturing a 14.6% share and carrying 19.22 lakh passengers in June. This improvement marked a notable increase in market share compared to May, showcasing Air India's strategic initiatives in the competitive aviation sector.
Tata Group's Influence
Vistara, another Tata Group airline, maintained its position as the third-largest carrier with a 9.7% market share and 12.76 lakh passengers transported during the month. The performance of Tata Group's airlines collectively saw their market share rise to 29.1%, demonstrating steady growth and customer preference. Air India Express saw a slight decline in market share to 4.8%, carrying 6.38 lakh passengers, while SpiceJet's market share dropped below 4% to 3.8%, carrying 5 lakh passengers. These trends highlight ongoing competition and operational dynamics within the Indian aviation market.
Challenges for Low-Cost Carriers
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported an overall growth of 4.28% in passenger numbers for the period from January to June 2024, compared to the same period in the previous year. This growth trajectory underscores the recovery and expansion efforts within the aviation industry post-pandemic, despite challenges such as fluctuating fuel prices and operational efficiencies.

Furthermore, the on-time performance (OTP) of airlines in June showed varied results, with Akasa leading at 79.5%, followed closely by Vistara at 79% and Air India Express at 78.4%. IndiGo reported an OTP of 75.6%, reflecting operational challenges during the month, while Air India and SpiceJet faced lower OTPs at 60.6% and 46.1%, respectively. Overall, the June 2024 data highlights IndiGo's continued dominance, Tata Group's growing influence in the aviation sector, and the sector's overall resilience amidst evolving market conditions.
