Visakhapatnam, August 26, 2025 – Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday commissioned two frontline warships of the Indian Navy, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, in a ceremony held at the Eastern Naval Command headquarters in Visakhapatnam.
The commissioning marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to enhance its maritime strength and security preparedness in the Indo-Pacific region, especially on the eastern seaboard.
INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri: Modern Warships for Modern Challenges
INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri are state-of-the-art warships equipped with stealth features, advanced radar systems, long-range missile capabilities, and cutting-edge sonar technology.
Designed for multi-dimensional warfare, these ships can undertake a variety of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, surface-to-surface strike missions, aerial defence, and humanitarian assistance operations.
Their induction will significantly boost the operational flexibility of the Indian Navy, allowing it to respond quickly to emerging threats in the Bay of Bengal and the wider Indo-Pacific.
Strategic Importance of the Eastern Seaboard
While commissioning the ships, Rajnath Singh emphasised that India’s eastern seaboard is becoming a critical maritime zone due to its proximity to vital international sea lanes. With growing challenges such as maritime piracy, illegal fishing, and regional tensions in the Indo-Pacific, India’s ability to secure its eastern coast and project power into the wider oceanic theatre is crucial.
He noted that the commissioning of these ships is part of a larger maritime vision that involves expanding India’s naval fleet and strengthening its self-reliance in defence production under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
Boost to Indigenous Defence Manufacturing
Both INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri are products of Indian shipyards, reflecting the government’s strong push toward indigenous defence manufacturing. The ships were built under the Project 17A frigate programme, which focuses on developing modern guided-missile frigates using advanced technologies.
The Defence Minister highlighted that indigenous shipbuilding not only boosts India’s strategic autonomy but also provides opportunities for skilled employment, innovation, and economic growth in the defence sector.
Strengthening India’s Naval Diplomacy
Apart from their operational role, the induction of these ships will also aid India in conducting joint exercises, humanitarian missions, and strategic partnerships with countries in the Indo-Pacific region. As maritime diplomacy becomes an essential tool in foreign policy, warships like Udaygiri and Himgiri strengthen India’s ability to project influence and support regional stability.
Conclusion
The commissioning of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri is a landmark development in India’s quest to build a powerful, modern, and self-reliant navy. With advanced capabilities, indigenous design, and strategic positioning, these warships will play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests and contributing to peace and security in the Indo-Pacific.
