The ongoing war between Iran and the Israel–United States alliance continued to intensify on Monday, March 16, 2026, entering its 17th consecutive day of direct military confrontation.
In one of the latest developments, the United Arab Emirates reportedly intercepted incoming Iranian missiles and drones, amid rising security threats across the Middle East region.
The escalation has triggered airspace disruptions, military strikes, and diplomatic pressure from world leaders, with no immediate signs of de-escalation.
Israel Strikes 200 Targets in Iran
According to the Israeli Air Force, its fighter jets carried out strikes on more than 200 targets across western and central Iran in the past 24 hours.
The targets reportedly included:
-
Missile launch systems
-
Military defence infrastructure
-
Operational headquarters
-
Strategic military installations
The strikes were part of Israel’s continued offensive against Iranian military assets following the escalation of hostilities between the two countries.
Trump Accuses Iran of AI-Driven Disinformation
Meanwhile, Donald Trump accused Iran of spreading artificial intelligence-generated disinformation about the ongoing war.
Posting on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump alleged that Iranian authorities were circulating misleading reports about damage inflicted on American military equipment.
He criticised media outlets for amplifying what he described as “false information” regarding American military losses.
Trump said Iran was “militarily ineffective and weak” but highly skilled in manipulating media narratives and spreading propaganda.
Macron Urges Iran to De-escalate
Amid rising tensions, Emmanuel Macron, President of France, held a phone conversation with Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran.
Following the call, Macron said he urged Iran to halt attacks across the Middle East and restore safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime oil routes.
Ensuring stability in the Strait is crucial for global energy supply and international trade.
Dubai Airport Disrupted After Drone Strike
Security concerns also spread to Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs.
Authorities temporarily suspended flights after a drone struck a fuel tank, triggering a fire near the airport facility.
Emergency teams from civil defence services quickly contained the blaze, and officials confirmed that no injuries were reported.
However, the incident forced authorities to briefly halt operations as a precautionary safety measure.
Emirates Flight Forced to Return
An Emirates flight travelling from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport to Dubai International Airport had to return mid-journey due to the security situation in Dubai.
The aircraft carrying 353 passengers and 19 crew members departed at 4:40 AM and returned safely to Thiruvananthapuram around 8:40 AM after the Dubai airport shutdown.
Airport officials said passengers were later shifted to the terminal while further travel arrangements were being assessed.
Dubai Closes Key Roads
In response to the emergency situation, Dubai Police temporarily closed Airport Road and the Airport Tunnel in the city.
Authorities advised motorists to avoid the area and take alternative routes until normal traffic conditions were restored.
Officials stated that traffic restrictions were implemented purely as a precautionary step amid the heightened security environment.
Japan Responds to US Naval Request
The conflict has also drawn reactions from Asia.
Sanae Takaichi, Prime Minister of Japan, said Tokyo had not yet received an official request from Washington regarding the deployment of Japanese warships to the Strait of Hormuz.
However, she added that Japan is reviewing possible steps to protect Japanese commercial vessels operating in the region, within the limits of its legal framework.
Thai Cargo Ship Attack and Rescue
In another development linked to the conflict, crew members from the Thai cargo vessel Mayuree Naree returned to Bangkok after being rescued near the Strait of Hormuz.
The ship had earlier been struck by a projectile and set ablaze near Oman, leaving several crew members injured.
Officials confirmed that three crew members remain missing, and search operations are continuing with coordination between Iranian and Omani authorities.
Trump Comments on Iran Nuclear Talks
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Donald Trump expressed doubts about Iran’s willingness to negotiate over its nuclear programme.
Trump said that while discussions with Iran were ongoing, he did not believe Tehran was yet ready to meet the conditions required for a new agreement.
He emphasised that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons would be the central condition for any future deal.
Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The ongoing conflict has drawn significant attention to the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
A large portion of the world’s oil shipments pass through this route, making it one of the most strategically important maritime corridors globally.
Any disruption to shipping in the region can have major consequences for global energy prices and international trade.
Rising Global Concern
The intensifying conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States has sparked growing concern among world leaders about the risk of a wider regional war.
With missile attacks, drone strikes, maritime disruptions, and diplomatic tensions increasing across the Middle East, the international community continues to call for urgent de-escalation and diplomatic dialogue.
However, with the war now entering its 17th day, the situation remains volatile and unpredictable, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
