Israel has initiated a significant military operation in the Gaza Strip named Operation Gideon Chariots, aiming to intensify pressure on Hamas to release the remaining hostages, according to Defense Minister Israel Katz. The operation is led with “great force” by the Israeli military following days of heavy airstrikes across Gaza that have killed hundreds of people.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to escalate pressure on Hamas with the goal of destroying the militant group that has controlled Gaza for nearly 20 years. The operation follows a recent visit to the region by former U.S. President Donald Trump, whose trip ended without visiting Israel. Expectations that Trump’s visit might lead to a ceasefire or renewed humanitarian aid have so far gone unmet.
Negotiations between Israel and Hamas remain stalled in Doha, Qatar. Hamas released an Israeli-American hostage as a goodwill gesture before Trump’s visit, but insists on a peace deal that would eventually end the conflict, a condition Israel rejects.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that over 150 people were killed in Israeli strikes in the last 24 hours alone, with the total death toll since Israel ended the January ceasefire on March 18 now approaching 3,000. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its casualty figures.
Israel believes that as many as 23 hostages remain alive in Gaza, although there is concern for the status of three individuals.
The conflict escalated sharply after October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and abducting 251 others. Israel’s military response has led to over 53,000 Palestinian deaths, including many women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
