Israel warns Tehran of consequences as Iran strikes kill civilians in Galilee

  • Iran fired missiles that killed four Israeli civilians, prompting a powerful Israeli retaliation targeting Iran’s Defence Ministry and energy infrastructure.

  • Israel warned Tehran’s residents would pay the price, while G7 leaders urged immediate de-escalation as fears of a regional war grow rapidly.

  • US-Iran nuclear talks were cancelled amid the violence, with China calling the Israeli attack on nuclear sites a dangerous precedent.

The Israel-Iran conflict escalated sharply on Sunday, June 15, 2025, after Iranian missile attacks reportedly killed four civilians in northern Israel, prompting Israel to launch a powerful counteroffensive directly targeting Tehran’s energy infrastructure and Defence Ministry headquarters.

As explosions rocked Tehran and missile sirens blared across Israeli cities, world leaders attending the G7 summit in Canada were left grappling with a crisis that is fast spiralling into an all-out regional war.

Fresh Deaths as Iran Targets Galilee Region

Iran launched a wave of missiles late Sunday night, several of which struck an apartment building in the Galilee region of Israel, according to Israeli emergency officials. Four people were confirmed dead, and dozens injured as rescue teams searched through rubble.

Iran’s state television proudly declared the operation as retaliation for previous Israeli strikes on its territory, while explosions were also reported across central Tehran, believed to be part of an Israeli drone and missile campaign.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) stated that the retaliation was aimed at Iran's “strategic and military nerve centres,” including the Ministry of Defence headquarters and key oil production and refining facilities.

Israel’s Stern Warning: ‘Tehran Will Pay the Price’

In a late-night statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government warned that “residents of Tehran will pay the price” if Iranian strikes continue to target Israeli civilians.

This follows several days of tit-for-tat attacks between the two regional powers, as part of a broader and more complex confrontation also involving Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

A senior Israeli defence official added that Israel is no longer treating the situation as proxy warfare but as a direct state-to-state confrontation, unprecedented in the decades-long animosity between the two nations.

Nuclear Talks Cancelled Amid Crisis

Planned diplomatic negotiations between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme, which were to be held in Oman this week, have now been abruptly cancelled, officials confirmed late Sunday.

This cancellation not only underscores the depth of the crisis but also erases hopes of a diplomatic off-ramp in the near future.

Analysts believe that any resumption of talks is unlikely unless hostilities cease immediately and both parties agree to a ceasefire—an increasingly remote possibility.

G7 Leaders Seek Urgent De-escalation

The Group of Seven (G7) summit, currently taking place in the Canadian Rockies, has been overshadowed by the escalating Middle East conflict.

Global leaders from the United States, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, and Italy have issued urgent calls to avoid a full-scale war, with a joint communique expected Monday.

China’s Foreign Minister condemned Israel’s attacks on nuclear-related sites in Iran, calling it a “dangerous precedent” that could ignite a wider regional or even global conflict.

Military Escalation Expands Beyond Borders

Israeli forces have reportedly mobilised additional troops and missile defence systems, while military analysts suggest this marks a new phase in the conflict, where direct action replaces proxy war dynamics.

Tehran, for its part, vowed to continue its “strategic retaliation” and warned of new waves of missile attacks if Israeli airstrikes do not cease.

Observers have noted unusual troop movements along Iran’s western border, suggesting that the country is preparing for prolonged engagements.

Meanwhile, reports from southern Lebanon indicate that Hezbollah may be preparing to enter the conflict more aggressively, posing multi-front challenges to Israeli forces.

Impact on Civilians and Infrastructure

Both nations have suffered civilian and infrastructural losses, with urban centres plunged into panic and many families fleeing border regions.

Air travel between the Middle East and Europe has been significantly impacted, with airlines rerouting or cancelling flights. Global oil prices spiked over fears that Iran’s production capabilities may be permanently damaged.

Meanwhile, humanitarian agencies warned of an impending crisis if urban areas in both Iran and Israel continue to be targeted.

Global Powers Face Dilemma

The crisis puts immense pressure on global powers to step in diplomatically. However, with US-Iran ties frozen, Russia embroiled in Ukraine, and China balancing its regional ambitions, there is no single actor capable of mediating quickly.

The United Nations Security Council is expected to hold an emergency session, but past divisions between veto-wielding members may once again paralyse meaningful action.

Former US diplomats have urged backchannel diplomacy as the only remaining tool to prevent what one termed “a Middle East version of the Cuban Missile Crisis.”

Conclusion: A War No One Can Afford

With tensions escalating, diplomacy derailed, and civilians paying the price, the Israel-Iran conflict now risks engulfing the wider West Asian region in chaos.

As the world watches, leaders face a pivotal question: will this crisis be managed through political will, or will the spiral of retaliation lead to irreversible catastrophe?
