In a striking display of India’s growing leadership in space technology, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced the development of a massive 40-storey rocket capable of launching up to 75,000 kg (75 tonnes) into low Earth orbit. The announcement was made by Dr. V. Narayanan, Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of both the Space Commission and ISRO, during the convocation ceremony at Osmania University.

Dr. Narayanan emphasised that this new heavy-lift vehicle represents one of the biggest technological leaps in India’s space history. For comparison, the first Indian launch vehicle, designed under the guidance of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, had a lift-off mass of just 17 tonnes and could carry only 35 kilograms into orbit. The new launch system will be capable of carrying more than 2,000 times that mass, making it suitable for large scientific observatories, massive defence platforms, constellation deployment, and commercial missions.

A Giant Step for India’s Space Programme

The 40-storey megastructure will move India into a select group of nations capable of super heavy-lift launches, placing the country in direct competition with major global space agencies and private players. According to Dr. Narayanan, the heavy-lift capability will support:

• Large-scale satellite networks for navigation, Earth observation, and broadband

• Deep-space missions requiring large payload stacks

• Commercial payloads for global customers

• Military and national security communication platforms

Ambitious Roadmap for 2025

In addition to the heavy-lift rocket development, Dr. Narayanan also unveiled several key missions planned for 2025, all of which will be executed using indigenously developed launch systems. These include:

The GSAT-7R mission is of particular strategic significance, as it will replace the incumbent GSAT-7 (Rukmini) and expand India’s maritime communication capabilities.

Massive Expansion of India’s Satellite Fleet

India currently operates 55 active satellites in orbit, serving domains such as communication, remote sensing, navigation, disaster management and defence. Dr. Narayanan noted that this number is expected to triple over the next three to four years, driven by newly planned constellations and enhanced launch capacity. This expansion will significantly boost India’s:

• National security infrastructure

• Scientific research capabilities

• Agriculture and weather monitoring systems

• Telecom and broadband coverage

National Recognition

During the convocation event, Dr. V. Narayanan was presented with an honorary Doctorate of Science by the Governor of Telangana, Mr. Jishnu Dev Varma, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to India’s space programme. The honour further highlights the critical role ISRO’s leadership continues to play in elevating India’s global position in the space arena.

India’s push toward a 75-tonne heavy-lift capacity underscores its determination to build a self-reliant, next-generation space programme capable of meeting both national and global needs. As ISRO ushers in this new era of advanced launch vehicles and large-scale satellite networks, the organisation is set to play an even more decisive role in shaping the future of space exploration, space-based services, and strategic deterrence.
