ISRO chief confirms 10 satellites are operating non-stop for India’s strategic and security needs.
-
India has launched 433 satellites for 34 countries and leads in 9 areas of global space operations.

ISRO supports disaster management, agriculture, education, and defence through advanced satellite tech.
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman V Narayanan has revealed that 10 satellites are working round-the-clock for strategic purposes to ensure the safety and security of Indians, especially in light of growing national and cross-border threats. The announcement comes during a sensitive time, as tensions between India and Pakistan remain high following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking at the 5th Convocation Ceremony of the Central Agricultural University (CAU) in Agartala, Narayanan stated, “We have to serve through our satellites to ensure the safety of our country.” With India’s 7,000-km-long coastline, satellite and drone technology has become indispensable for continuous monitoring, surveillance, and protection.
Strategic and Defence Applications of ISRO Satellites
Narayanan’s speech highlighted ISRO’s active contribution to strategic monitoring. These ten satellites, constantly orbiting the earth, play a vital role in tracking potential threats, maritime activities, and border infiltrations, thus enhancing India’s defence preparedness.
The satellites not only provide surveillance capabilities but are also instrumental in early warning systems and precision mapping, supporting both Indian Armed Forces and security agencies in their strategic operations.
ISRO’s Contribution to Public Welfare and Development
In addition to strategic use, ISRO’s satellites are serving civilians in a wide range of sectors. These include:
-
Agriculture: Satellites help in assessing crop health, irrigation patterns, and yield prediction.
-
Tele-education and Telemedicine: By reaching remote areas with digital education and medical services.
-
Weather Forecasting and Environmental Monitoring: Assisting in disaster preparedness and climate data tracking.
-
Food Security: Through land usage mapping and agricultural planning support.
Narayanan noted that ISRO’s space infrastructure has helped reduce loss of life during disasters, stating that compared to earlier times when “thousands of lives were lost, today that is not the case,” thanks to satellite-based early alerts.
India’s Global Position in Space Leadership
Narayanan proudly stated that India holds the number one position globally in nine areas of the space sector. He emphasized ISRO’s role in launching 433 satellites for 34 countries, showcasing India's ability as a reliable space launch service provider.
One of ISRO’s most notable achievements is the Chandrayaan-1 mission, where India was the first country to discover evidence of water molecules on the Moon’s surface.
Climate Change Collaboration and International Partnerships
In a notable international move, Narayanan announced that India has developed satellites for G20 countries for climate change monitoring and critical global missions. Furthermore, he shared that India and the US are jointly working on the world’s most advanced and expensive Earth-imaging satellite, marking a significant milestone in Indo-US space collaboration.
ISRO’s Humble Beginnings and Future Vision
Highlighting India’s journey in space, Narayanan said that until 1975, India had no satellite technology and was almost 70 years behind advanced nations. Today, it is one of the leaders in the field.
He also expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Before India celebrates 100 years of independence, it will become a leader in every field and a major contributor to global progress.”
Focus on North-East India and Youth Empowerment
The ISRO chief also pointed out the organisation’s efforts to empower and uplift northeastern states. He announced that 100 science students from each of the eight northeastern states will be given a chance to visit the ISRO Centre in Bengaluru to inspire and foster curiosity about space science and technology.
This initiative reflects ISRO’s commitment to inclusive growth, ensuring that even the remotest regions are engaged in India’s space journey.
Conclusion: ISRO as the Backbone of a Secure and Advanced India
ISRO’s satellites today are not just scientific marvels; they are guardians of India’s skies and shores, lifelines for remote villages, and the eyes of the nation during disasters. With visionary leadership under V Narayanan, ISRO is not just looking at the stars but also firmly securing the land beneath.
From detecting water on the Moon to monitoring seashores and saving lives, ISRO’s multifaceted role is paving the way for a stronger, safer, and smarter India. As geopolitical tensions rise and climate challenges grow, the strategic and civilian roles of satellite technology will only become more critical.
India’s future, quite literally, is looking up—towards the sky.
