On April 11, 2025, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made significant remarks about India's trade negotiations, particularly with the United States and the European Union, during the Carnegie Global Technology Summit. Highlighting the changing global trade dynamics, Jaishankar expressed that India is "geared up for a high degree of urgency" in its approach to trade deals with both the US and EU. He noted the fundamental shift in the US's approach to global engagement, with consequences across various domains, especially trade.
Jaishankar emphasized that the trade deals between India and these regions are highly challenging, particularly due to the ambitious nature of US goals and the rapidly changing global landscape. “We are certainly geared up for a very high degree of urgency. I mean, we see a window. We want to see stuff,” Jaishankar stated. He pointed out that while India and the US had been in talks for four years during the Trump administration, there were still areas where mutual understanding had yet to be fully achieved. Similarly, Jaishankar described EU-India trade negotiations, noting the prolonged nature of the discussions but also acknowledging their significance.
A key aspect of Jaishankar’s address was the ongoing US-China trade tensions, which he explained as a crucial factor in shaping global trade dynamics. He noted that while trade between the US and China has been a significant force, technology has also played a central role. “The trade story has also been a tech story,” Jaishankar said, underlining how shifts in China’s technological advancements have had far-reaching impacts on the US and other countries. Jaishankar further suggested that both the US and China have been influencing each other’s policies and trade strategies, especially in the technology sector, with countries like Japan and South Korea also vying for a geopolitical comeback through technological innovation.
In his address, Jaishankar also highlighted India’s strides in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and its prioritization of the semiconductor industry, marking these as crucial to India’s future economic and technological growth. “The priority now given after many decades to semiconductors is an example,” Jaishankar added, reflecting on India's growing role in global technological developments.
Through the Global Tech Summit, Jaishankar emphasized that India is progressing positively in the technological domain, not only as a consumer but also as an emerging producer in sectors like semiconductors and digital infrastructure. This reflects the country’s commitment to positioning itself as a leader in the global tech ecosystem. Jaishankar’s remarks signaled India’s readiness to adapt to the changing global trade environment, stressing the importance of engaging with the US, EU, and other global powers to secure beneficial trade agreements.
