Over 9.29 lakh schools and Anganwadi centres have received clean water access.

According to the Jal Shakti ministry, nearly 16 crore rural households, representing an impressive 78.58% of rural homes, now have access to potable water. This significant improvement marks a dramatic increase from just 17% coverage at the inception of the Jal Jeevan Mission. The mission was launched with the ambitious goal of reducing the rural-urban divide and enhancing public health through improved water access.

As of October 6, the ministry reported that 15.19 crore rural households have received tap water connections, ensuring robust coverage across the nation. The Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) to every rural household by 2024, addressing not only the accessibility of water but also the quality of water, especially in drought-prone areas. This initiative has directly benefited approximately 19 crore rural families, ensuring that they have reliable access to safe drinking water.

Since the mission's launch, it has successfully added 11.95 crore new tap water connections. Notably, several states, including Goa, Haryana, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh, have achieved 100% coverage for rural households. This is a remarkable milestone in ensuring equitable access to essential resources.

The mission’s impact extends beyond households; it also encompasses schools and Anganwadi centres. Over 9.29 lakh educational and childcare facilities across the nation now have access to clean water, contributing to better health and hygiene standards among children.

Additionally, the ministry has taken proactive steps to empower local communities by training over 24 lakh women to test water quality using Field Test Kits. More than 54 lakh water samples have been tested to date, ensuring that the water supplied is safe for consumption.

The Jal Jeevan Mission stands as a testament to the Indian government's commitment to improving water access and quality in rural areas, paving the way for a healthier and more equitable future.
