Experts warn such rhetoric undermines Pakistan’s efforts to dissociate from extremist groups globally
Leaders of the banned Pakistan-based Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a front for the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group, have openly claimed responsibility for last year’s anti-government protests in Bangladesh that led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ouster. Senior JuD figures Saifullah Kasuri and Muzammil Hashmi made these claims in public speeches in Pakistan, linking the events to longstanding resentment over the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
Kasuri, speaking in Punjab’s Allahabad, described the protests as revenge for Pakistan’s 1971 dismemberment and declared their success in Dhaka as a historical victory. Hashmi echoed these sentiments in Gujranwala, claiming JuD had defeated Hasina last year.
The leaders also addressed the Indian airstrike on their Muridke headquarters following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. Kasuri mourned the death of a JuD member, Mudassar, in the strike and criticised being labelled as the mastermind of the attack by India. He vowed that the group is preparing the next generation for jihad and remains unafraid of death.
These provocative remarks have sparked concern among observers and former diplomats who say such extremist rhetoric contradicts Pakistan’s official stance on combating terrorism. The statements risk complicating Pakistan’s efforts to convince the global community, including the Financial Action Task Force, that it has severed ties with terror networks within its borders.
The JuD’s open declarations expose continuing challenges in addressing cross-border terrorism and regional security in South Asia.
