Jammu-Kashmir Faces Heavy Rains and Hailstorm as IMD Issues Yellow Alert

On the morning of May 31, residents of Jammu and Kashmir woke up to cloudy skies and torrential rainfall, significantly impacting daily life across the region. The Ramban district reported hailstorms, while Udhampur experienced moderate showers leading to localized waterlogging and disruption of normal activities.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert across Jammu-Kashmir and adjoining areas, predicting scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40 to 50 kmph. This weather pattern is expected to persist from May 31 to June 3, affecting not just Jammu-Kashmir but also Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Additionally, isolated to scattered rainfall is forecasted over Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Heavy Rainfall and Weather Hazards

IMD has also warned of isolated heavy rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on May 31, raising concerns about potential landslides, mudslides, and flash floods in vulnerable areas. The Jammu-Kashmir Meteorological Centre has issued an advisory highlighting the possibility of moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in some parts of the region today.

Residents have been cautioned to stay away from loose structures, electric cables, poles, and trees, which pose a risk of falling or damage during these weather conditions. The warning also advises caution near water bodies and flood-prone areas due to the heightened risk of flash floods following intense rainfall.

Local Weather Conditions

For Jammu city, the forecast predicts partly cloudy skies with chances of light rain or thunderstorms, and temperatures ranging between 37°C maximum and 21°C minimum.

In Muzaffarabad, cloudy weather is expected throughout the day, with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms possible. Temperatures here are likely to range from 33°C to 15°C. Similar conditions with temperatures between 37°C and 22°C are forecasted for Mirpur.

Broader Weather Scenario

The IMD has also issued a red alert for Assam on May 31 following continuous heavy rainfall that has caused widespread flooding and damage across northeastern states. Several other states including Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of West Bengal remain on an orange alert due to ongoing rains and flood risks.

Preparedness and Public Safety

The authorities in Jammu-Kashmir have urged the public to remain vigilant and follow all safety advisories issued by meteorological and disaster management departments. Efforts are underway to monitor vulnerable zones prone to landslides and floods, with emergency response teams on alert to manage any incidents.

The combination of heavy rainfall, hailstorm activity, and strong winds calls for caution among commuters and residents, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas where waterlogging and soil erosion risks are high.

Conclusion

As the yellow alert remains active, Jammu-Kashmir continues to experience unstable weather marked by heavy rains, thunderstorms, and hailstorms. The ongoing forecast warns of potential landslides, mudslides, and flash floods, making it essential for residents and authorities to stay prepared and heed warnings to minimise disruption and ensure safety through this period of adverse weather.
