  1. Incessant rainfall in J&K triggered multiple landslides in Ramban, blocking Jammu-Srinagar NH and halting all traffic movement.

  2. IMD issued rain alerts across Kathua, Samba, Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar, with rivers flowing above danger levels and flood threats rising.

  3. Schools remained shut in Jammu division as Rajnath Singh and LG Manoj Sinha reviewed the flood situation and relief measures.

Incessant rainfall has caused severe disruption in Jammu and Kashmir, with continuous downpours leading to multiple landslides and cloudbursts across the region. On Tuesday, the crucial Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) was shut in Ramban district after heavy landslides and falling rocks blocked several stretches of the road. Authorities confirmed that vehicular traffic has been halted completely, and commuters have been advised to avoid travel on this route until further notice.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rainfall alert across several districts of the Jammu region, including Kathua, Samba, Doda, Jammu, Ramban, and Kishtwar. The heavy rains have raised concerns of flash floods, with several rivers reported to be flowing above the danger mark. Authorities have put local administration and disaster response teams on high alert to prevent casualties and manage emergencies.

In light of the worsening weather conditions, all schools in the Jammu division were closed following an official government order. This move was taken as a precaution to ensure the safety of students and staff, given the risks of landslides and road blockages.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a high-level review meeting at Raj Bhavan in Jammu to assess the flood situation across the Union Territory. The meeting was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh. Discussions centered around immediate relief, evacuation measures, and the preparedness of the administration to handle worsening conditions.

Later, the Defence Minister visited a government hospital in Jammu, where he met victims of the recent cloudburst in Kishtwar. He expressed solidarity with the injured and lauded the medical staff and doctors for their swift response and tireless efforts in providing timely treatment. Singh reiterated the central government’s commitment to extend full support to the UT during this crisis.

The closure of the Jammu-Srinagar highway has brought major inconvenience, as the road is a vital lifeline connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country. With heavy rains forecast to continue, restoration work is likely to face significant challenges. Authorities have deployed men and machinery to clear debris and ensure safe passage, but frequent landslides are hampering progress.

This latest spell of rainfall underscores the vulnerability of Jammu and Kashmir to extreme weather events. Over the past few years, the region has witnessed multiple instances of flash floods, landslides, and cloudbursts, raising concerns about climate change and the urgent need for improved disaster management infrastructure.

Residents across flood-prone districts are being urged to remain indoors, avoid riverbanks, and stay alert for emergency advisories. Relief camps have been kept ready, and the administration has assured round-the-clock monitoring of the evolving situation.

The coming days will be crucial, as the weather department continues to predict heavy rainfall across several districts. Authorities are focused on ensuring minimum disruption to essential services, while also prioritizing the safety of travellers and residents in vulnerable areas.
