In a significant move for the Indian cricket team, Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed the vice-captain for the upcoming three-match home Test series against New Zealand, which starts on November 16 in Bengaluru. The second and third Tests of the series are scheduled to be held in Pune and Mumbai on October 24 and November 1, respectively.

Rohit Sharma, the current captain, is facing personal issues that may cause him to miss one of the first two matches against Australia, increasing the spotlight on Bumrah. The five-match Test series in Australia is set to commence on November 22 in Perth, followed by the second Test in Adelaide on December 6. There’s a chance that Rohit could skip either the first or second match, creating an opportunity for Bumrah to step into a more prominent leadership role.

Interestingly, India did not name a vice-captain for the recent home series against Bangladesh, which they won convincingly by 2-0. This could signify the Indian selectors' intent to prepare Bumrah for a more significant role in the future. His prior experience leading the team is notable; he captained India during the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston in July 2022 and also led the side in the away T20I series against Ireland in 2023.

Adding to his accolades, Bumrah has recently regained the No. 1 spot in the ICC bowlers’ ranking after an outstanding performance against Bangladesh. Over the last eight Tests since his return from injury in August 2023, Bumrah has been in exceptional form, taking 42 wickets at an astonishing average of 14.69. His overall Test career stats are impressive, with 170 wickets from 38 Tests, averaging 20.18 with 10 five-wicket hauls.

In a setback for the team, Yash Dayal, who was part of the squad for the Bangladesh series, was not included due to a shoulder injury sustained during a Ranji Trophy match. His recovery timeline remains uncertain, which could jeopardize his chances of touring Australia. The rest of the squad that performed against Bangladesh has been retained, ensuring consistency in the team’s approach.

However, Mohammed Shami, currently recovering from ankle surgery, was not considered for selection. The inclusion of young talents like Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mayank Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna as traveling reserves indicates a strategic focus on the next generation of players in Indian cricket.
