Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, has passed away at the age of 100, leaving behind a legacy that spans both his time in office and his remarkable work as a global humanitarian after his presidency. His death occurred on Sunday, in his beloved hometown of Plains, Georgia, where he spent most of his life with his wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96. Carter, who had entered hospice care 22 months before his death, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.
Carter’s presidency, which was marked by his moderate policies, faith-driven governance, and efforts to promote peace and advance civil rights, came at a challenging time in American history, following the tumultuous events of Watergate and the Vietnam War. Despite his defeat in the 1980 elections following the Iran hostage crisis, Carter’s post-presidency was truly transformative, focusing on global humanitarian efforts and advocacy for human rights.
US President Joe Biden mourned the loss of Carter, describing him as an "extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian." Biden highlighted Carter’s tireless efforts to eradicate disease, forge peace, and advance civil rights. He also called on young people to learn from Carter’s life, which was rooted in faith, humility, and purpose. Biden, who had known Carter for over 50 years, shared how Carter had supported him during personal tragedy, and emphasized their shared battle with cancer, which had claimed both their families. As a tribute, President Biden has ordered a state funeral for Carter in Washington.
Born in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924, Carter’s path to the presidency was far from conventional. A peanut farmer by trade, he was a moderate Democrat who rose to prominence as the governor of Georgia. His 1976 presidential campaign was notable for his promise of honesty and transparency, a refreshing change after the Watergate scandal and the Nixon administration. Carter’s message resonated with the American public, and he narrowly defeated incumbent Gerald Ford in the election.
However, Carter’s presidency faced challenges on multiple fronts. The Cold War pressures, rising oil prices, and social upheaval over racial issues and women's rights made governing difficult. His most significant achievement during this time was the Camp David Accords, where he brokered a peace agreement between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in 1978. This peace deal earned Carter widespread praise and became a defining moment in his administration.
However, despite his achievements, Carter’s time in office was marked by economic challenges, including double-digit inflation and an ongoing energy crisis. The Iran hostage crisis, in which American diplomats were held hostage for over a year, severely impacted his presidency and contributed to his defeat by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 election. Carter’s defeat was a painful moment, but it paved the way for his extraordinary post-presidency career.
Following his loss, Carter’s life took on new dimensions. In 1982, he and his wife Rosalynn founded The Carter Center, an organization dedicated to promoting peace, human rights, and public health worldwide. The center’s global humanitarian work included efforts to reduce nuclear tensions, promote free elections, and work toward the eradication of diseases like guinea worm disease. Carter’s direct engagement in these efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, in recognition of his untiring commitment to peace and social justice.
Throughout his later years, Carter continued to travel the world, meeting with leaders and advocating for issues such as democracy, human rights, and global peace. His direct approach often put him at odds with US presidents, including his outspoken criticism of the 2003 invasion of Iraq and his advocacy for North Korea's inclusion in international affairs, positions that earned him both praise and criticism. Nonetheless, Carter’s approach to diplomacy, rooted in his strong faith and belief in humanity, made him an influential figure far beyond the political sphere.
In addition to his diplomatic efforts, Carter’s involvement in Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit that builds homes for low-income families, was one of the many ways he continued to serve the less fortunate throughout his life. His commitment to public health, particularly his work in eradicating diseases, was another cornerstone of his legacy, as his efforts brought global attention to the importance of healthcare access in impoverished regions.
As Carter’s life came to an end, the world remembered him not only for his presidency but for his extraordinary post-presidential contributions. His work serves as an example of how a former leader can continue to have a profound impact on the world. As Carter himself said, his faith demanded that he serve humanity, and he did so for as long as he could, with whatever resources he had.
