Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced an exciting new venture in sustainable construction by planning to build India's first multi-storey office entirely made from engineered bamboo. This ambitious project, covering 40,500 square feet, is set to be located in Bengaluru and reflects the company's commitment to eco-friendly architecture and reducing carbon footprints.

Prashant Shankhinamath, the Managing Director of JLR, emphasized the eco-friendly benefits of using engineered bamboo, stating, "This concept is more eco-friendly and reduces more CO2 emissions." Engineered bamboo is a composite material derived from bamboo wood, recognized for its impressive strength, comparable to steel. This innovative building material not only offers a sustainable alternative but also contributes to environmental conservation.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 18 crore, and it is expected to be completed within a year. The office will consist of a 9,000 square feet basement constructed using reinforced cement concrete (RCC), while the 31,500 square feet multi-storey superstructure will be built entirely from engineered bamboo wood lumber. This pioneering project is expected to set a precedent for future constructions, highlighting the viability of bamboo as a primary building material.

Situated on a 15,558.96 square feet plot overlooking Ulsoor Lake, adjacent to the Madras Sappers entry gate in Bengaluru, the structure will feature ground plus two additional floors, complete with a terrace supported by a lightweight roof. An official involved in the project noted that this will be the first building in Karnataka of such scale utilizing engineered bamboo.

Notably, the move to use engineered bamboo is part of a broader trend in the region, as the interiors of Bengaluru's Terminal 2 (T2) at the airport have also integrated bamboo into its design. Spanning 255,645 square meters, T2 employs bamboo in ceilings, pillars, railings, staircases, and various other structures, although it is primarily clad in steel. Shankhinamath pointed out that while the airport's design uses bamboo alongside steel, their office will feature steel only for the joiners, thus fully embracing the strength of engineered bamboo.

This new office by JLR is expected to revolutionize the architectural landscape in India, especially within the commercial sector. The use of engineered bamboo signifies a shift towards more sustainable practices, aligning with global trends of prioritizing environmentally friendly materials in construction.

As the project progresses, JLR is paving the way for other companies to adopt similar sustainable building practices, promoting a greener future for the construction industry in India. The initiative showcases the potential of innovative materials in reducing carbon footprints while enhancing the strength and durability of structures.
