Jonathan Trott has reflected on his journey with Afghanistan national cricket team after his tenure as head coach ended following their exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan bowed out of the tournament despite registering an emphatic 82-run win over Canada national cricket team. Earlier defeats to New Zealand national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team meant they failed to qualify for the Super 8 stage from Group D.

The match against Canada marked Trott’s final game in charge after more than three years at the helm.

Looking ahead, Trott emphasised the importance of strengthening Afghanistan’s pace-bowling resources to complement star spinners like Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

He noted that while Afghanistan’s spin attack is world-class, the team must:

• Develop consistent seam bowlers

• Reduce over-reliance on spinners

• Adapt to varying global conditions

This, he suggested, would be especially crucial for tournaments like the 2027 World Cup in South Africa and Namibia, where pace-friendly conditions may dominate.

Batting Depth Improving

Trott acknowledged that Afghanistan are building stronger batting resources and depth. However, he stressed that competing consistently at the global level requires a balanced attack.

He expressed satisfaction with his tenure but admitted uncertainty about his immediate future plans.

“I’ve really enjoyed this and I don’t know what the future holds,” Trott said, adding that he wished Afghanistan had progressed further in the tournament.

England Coaching Ambition

Trott also spoke candidly about his admiration for England, where he enjoyed a successful playing career. He admitted he would “love” the opportunity one day to coach a team he holds dear.

While no future role has been confirmed, his comments hint at a possible aspiration to work with England in the future.
