On Thursday, December 5, 2024, Justice Manmohan, former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, was sworn in as a Supreme Court judge in a ceremony administered by Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna. With this appointment, the functional strength of the Supreme Court now stands at 33 judges, just one short of its sanctioned strength of 34. This marks an important moment for the judiciary, as Justice Manmohan brings his vast experience and expertise to the nation’s highest court.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Manmohan’s elevation to the apex court on November 28, 2024. The Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy, and Abhay S Oka, unanimously made the decision. The recommendation came in light of the fact that the Supreme Court Bench was currently represented by only one judge from the Delhi High Court, and the Collegium sought to rectify this imbalance.

Justice Manmohan, born in Delhi on December 17, 1962, has had a distinguished career in law. He completed his schooling from Modern School, Barakhamba Road, and went on to earn his B.A. (Hons.) in History from Hindu College, University of Delhi. After obtaining his LL.B. from the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, he enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987.

His career saw significant milestones, including his appointment as a senior panel advocate for the Government of India in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court. Justice Manmohan was designated a senior advocate by the Delhi High Court in January 2003. His appointment as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in March 2008, and his subsequent confirmation as a permanent judge in December 2009, solidified his place in the judiciary.

Justice Manmohan’s appointment to the Supreme Court of India has been welcomed across the legal community, as his judicial experience and legal acumen are expected to contribute significantly to the court’s proceedings.
