He was widely known as the first karsevak to lay the foundation stone of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on November 9, 1989. His contribution to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and BJP as a leader from Bihar made him a pivotal figure in the temple movement and social harmony efforts.

Born in Bihar, Chaupal rose to prominence through his deep involvement in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. His selection as the first person to place the foundation brick was seen as a symbolic move to represent Dalit participation in the movement, strengthening social inclusivity. His leadership within the VHP and later as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in Bihar solidified his political and social impact.

In recent years, Chaupal had been battling kidney disease. Despite undergoing a kidney transplant with a donation from his daughter, his health continued to decline. His passing marks the loss of a key historical figure in India’s religious and political landscape.

His legacy remains deeply tied to the construction of the Ram Mandir, which was inaugurated on January 22, 2024. Leaders across the political and religious spectrum have paid tributes, acknowledging his role in shaping one of India’s most significant religious movements.
