Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar ignited a political storm on November 14, when he made a remark during a rally in Nagpur that targeted Amruta Fadnavis, the wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The remark was a response to Devendra Fadnavis' "Dharamyuddh" comment made during a poll campaign rally on November 13.

Kanhaiya, taking a dig at Fadnavis' speech, stated, "The job of saving 'dharma' should be of everyone, and it should not be like people are saving the religion and Deputy CM's wife is making reels on Instagram." He emphasized the need for collective responsibility in protecting religion, questioning whether Fadnavis’ family members would join the cause or enjoy privileges like studying abroad in Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Kanhaiya's comment directly criticized the Deputy CM's wife, implying a disconnect between the serious political discourse of "saving religion" and Amruta’s presence on social media. He questioned the consistency of the BJP’s rhetoric, stating, "If we want to save religion, let us save it together. It can't be like that. Everyone will save the religion together." This remark quickly sparked heated debate on social media and across political platforms.

The BJP was swift in its reaction, with party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla condemning Kanhaiya's comment as an insult to Amruta Fadnavis and, by extension, all Marathi women. Poonawalla criticized Kanhaiya, labeling him a "Naxali Afzal Guru supporter" and accusing him of using derogatory terms like "rejected maal" and "imported maal". According to Poonawalla, such insults would not go unnoticed, and the people of Maharashtra would teach Congress a lesson for disrespecting Marathi women.

The controversy comes amidst the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, where the BJP and Congress are embroiled in a fierce battle for control. Fadnavis’ earlier speech invoking “Dharamyuddh” was aimed at addressing the issue of “vote-jihad” and rallying voters to stand up for their faith. In response, Congress leaders like Kanhaiya Kumar have been vocal in criticizing the BJP’s tactics and their alleged efforts to polarize voters based on religion.

This incident highlights the growing tensions in the run-up to the elections, where political rhetoric and personal attacks are becoming central to the campaign. As the voting days approach, this exchange is expected to intensify the divide between the two major parties, with each trying to garner the support of Maharashtra’s electorate by presenting their leadership and values as superior to the other.
