The Karnataka Cabinet has given the green light to a major infrastructure initiative in Bengaluru, approving the construction of an 18.5 km twin-tube tunnel road from Hebbal flyover to Silk Board Junction. With an estimated cost of Rs 12,690 crore, this ambitious project aims to address the city's chronic traffic congestion and improve overall transportation efficiency.
The tunnel road project is anticipated to offer several benefits, including a reduction in travel time, fuel consumption, and air pollution by decreasing the number of idling vehicles. By providing a direct route between key junctions, proponents argue that the tunnel will significantly enhance traffic flow and connectivity in Bengaluru, which is known for its persistent traffic issues.
However, the project has not been without controversy. Critics have raised concerns about the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of such an extensive infrastructure project. They argue that the project lacks a comprehensive detailed project report and necessary clearances, which could potentially lead to legal challenges. There is also skepticism about whether such a high-cost solution is the best approach, with some suggesting that investments in mass rapid transit systems like metro and bus services might provide a more efficient and sustainable solution to the city’s congestion problems.

Despite these debates, the Karnataka government is moving forward with the project under a public-private partnership model. This marks Bengaluru as the fourth Indian city to undertake an underground road tunnel project, following in the footsteps of cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai.
The approval of the tunnel road project signifies a significant step in Bengaluru's infrastructural development, aiming to modernize the city's transport network and address long-standing traffic issues. As the project progresses, it will be closely watched for its impact on traffic patterns and urban planning in Bengaluru.
